B) "Last minute emergency? Call me after hours with a tight over-night deadline."

C) Test me on a translation that has obfuscation via one technical subject operating in the context of a diametrically opposite technical arena: i.e Insurance and Technology; Computer Science ERP within a Manufacturing Environment.

My humble suggestions to my fellow translators & agency principals….

Translators who position their professional progression & continuing education hours to “looking good on paper” are dangerous when a valuable client relationship is on the line, ergo, why take chances? Chairman Mao had a saying or two about paper tigers that we will not entertain here.
To hunt down the indications of a paper tiger, shoot me a couple
hundred words excerpted from the most complex segment of the translation: I'll send back. Titled, decorated translators are rendering translations of technical and financial documents that are literally correct, but terms are taken to be in the incorrect context, making for fault lines in the foundational premises of the translation. Ex: Umschreibung was translated 'rewrite,' a common procedure-call in Computing, appropriate to the software for which we were describing the metadata & tags. Except, because it was in the context of a rare term in Insurance (in both languages) of re-writing insurance, lost upon the translation was that the rewriting was to the policy and not to the file on the server. Small problem the client said, 'Fix it or else.' I was given fewer than 72 hours to fix the numerous points of confusion at the junction of two specialized vocabularies, in this case Insurance and Computer Science.
I translated an automotive materials ‘Novel Use’ patent document—never having a clue what it really did—but knowing the lingua franca of scientific method and its consequently precise terminology. This won the business but a non-disclosure I can't violate because of potential pending M&A activity resulting from the needed translation. (By way of disclosure, I have no idea if they had it edited by a bi-lingual
scientist/specialist after I submitted it.)

To your success in 2008!

Mark Chilson
