Much of the Ebro Valley is flooded by a continuation of hydro-electric dams and weirs. Holding huge stocks of common carp, zander, barbel and black bass. Do you think that is going to be strong enough for these big fish? 01:02:06 Gary Allen VO That will be fine, John, yeah. 01:02:07 Host OC Well, let’s hope they are biting then huh? 01:02:09 Gary Allen OC/VO Hope so too, John. 01:02:13 Host VO Due to wind direction, Gary rated our best chances lay in the higher reaches of this beautiful water shed, in the upper lake as it is called where the river has been dramatically widened and deepened by the high dam at Mequinenza. 01:02:35 Host VO And to fish here, a boat is imperative. So we slipped our 16 footer in at Chiprana and sat off up river feeling a distinct chill in the early morning air. As we pass the old now partly sunken monastery, I couldn’t help imagining what the valley once looked like prior to it being flooded, just as spectacular I expect. Bird life is phenomenal. Ospreys we’ve got the kites. We have got various types of falcon. I’ve definitely peregrines. You have got mahseer in India and you got the wels catfish, perhaps vandu catfish in Africa and, and the odd salmon turndoo catfish but there are not many. Oh, that is a good fish, Gary. You can see at the bottom of the mouth there those crushing pads top and bottom where a fish goes down it just minces it up like, like that and you have got these huge abrasive pads, you know, I’ve done my knuckle in there slightly. You have only got to rub it and thousands of tiny little teeth, top and bottom which it grips its prey with because it has got tremendous gripping strength there. 01:10:52 Gary Allen VO Indeed, John. 01:10:53 Host VO What a mouth. In fact, guests also have the option of renting houseboats and towing a fishing skiff to explore over 50 miles of the Ebro which throughout is simply jam packed full of common carp to over 40 pounds, zander into double figures and more monster pussies than anywhere I have ever fished. 01:16:31 Host OC The River Ebro system is certainly a diverse watershed.
