Translation - English The high international prices of petroleum and the global consciousness about the effects of the intensive use of fossil fuels on the planet’s climate motivate researchers to search for alternative solutions in order to make the current transportation system and the mitigation of the harmful effects of the emission of toxic air pollutants in the environment compatible. It is believed that fuels produced from renewable sources will be the transition links between current technology, fossil carbon, and that of the future, hydrogen. Biodiesel will probably play an outstanding role in this transition due to its low environmental impact, its similarity to petroleum diesel and the resulting utilization of all the technology already developed for this energetic segment. The focus of this dissertation will be the partial replacement of petroleum diesel with the biodiesel derived from animal fatty waste, more specifically that produced from tallow, since Brazil has the world’s largest commercial bovine herd. The technical feasibility of the production of biodiesel derived from tallow is demonstrated as well as the production scale it may achieve in the country and in Bahia. This study aims to point out the potential of this energy source derived from animal fat, as well as identify the characteristics presented as strong points and those that demand improvement so that the use of the new fuel in the current cycle diesel engines can be made feasible. The present work has been developed from bibliographic research on texts produced worldwide, from interviews and field surveys through visits to the largest meatpacking companies. Among the raw materials with potential for the production of biodiesel, this study aims to show the potential of tallow regarding its availability in the country, the technical aspects of the biodiesel production process using this raw material, the economic feasibility of this production route, and the positive exernalities to the environment that this production route may add. This study also presents an analysis of the regulatory outline implemented in the country aiming at inserting biodiesel in the national energy matrix, pointing out the most relevant legal tools. Finally, the study presents its conclusions with the indication of possible regulatory adjustments to be implemented, the impact of the quality of tallow in the productive process of biodiesel, an estimate study of the amount of tallow that the country may have for the production of biodiesel, and the positive impacts to the environment and to society that the implementation of of this economic activity may generate.
