Translation - English Blair reaffirms the European desire to strengthen ties with Moscow
In London, following talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the British prime minister, Tony Blair, who presides over the EU, confirmed today that the European Union would like to improve relations with Russia.
“Today it is obvious to me and to my European counterparts and colleagues to which extent the relations between Europe and Russia are important to our own economic future and to our own safety”, he added.
At the meeting, the European and Russian representatives focused mainly on the topics of petroleum imports, the fight against terrorism and organized crime and topics from the international agenda such as the peace process in the Middle East and the conflict with Iran.
The relations between the EU and Russia have changed significantly in the last few years with the proximity of European borders to the Russian border and with the European acknowledgment of the state of the Russian economy in the marketplace.
The talks actually focused on the search for a larger economic drive which would allow Russia to enter the World Trade Organization.
The collaboration between both parties is supported by the growing European dependency on Russian hydrocarbons. Half of the gas and almost a third of the petroleum consumed in the 25 (EU countries) is supplied by or transported through Russia at a time when the International Energy Agency predicts an increase of approximately 50% of the European demand for gas in the next 15 years.
