For twenty years, an enigmatic man named KANET has found refuge from the sins of his past in
a remote monastery in Thailand. His life as a monk remains undisturbed until one day, an OLD
FRIEND arrives at the monastery to find him. It isn’t a social visit. Kanet’s parents have been
involved in a terrible accident that left his father dead and his mother clinging to life in a hospital
bed. Kanet has been summoned back to Bangkok to make the necessary decisions and
arrangements on behalf of his parents. After the friend departs, Kanet is lost in his thoughts.
The ABBOT offers sagely advice and his fellow monks ceremoniously send him off to face a
virtually new world.
Upon his arrival in Bangkok it is pure culture shock, a collision of the old and the new. Twenty
years of isolation prepares no man for the mayhem that is today’s Bangkok: The throng of
people, the around-the-clock traffic gridlock and the concrete jungle of modern buildings
towering over crumbling shanties bear little resemblance to the Bangkok he left behind two
decades ago. His first stop is the hospital, where his MOTHER wages the fight of her life. After
speaking with the DOCTOR he learns that his mother is going to require treatment – expensive
treatment – for her injuries. What little his parents had in savings has already been used up
settling his father’s affairs and caring for his mother thus far. Despondent, Kanet returns to his
parents’ tiny apartment, located directly above their general store – which is not much larger.
The meager earnings from the store – already dwindling because of a newly-opened 7-11
nearby – don’t come close to covering the costs of his mother’s care. Kanet decides to find a
job, but twenty years as a monk doesn’t mean much on a resume, so Kanet is forced to take a
job as a tuk-tuk driver. The OWNER of the tuk-tuk company is facing a problem similar to his
parents’ store, he’s being squeezed out of business by taxis and the skytrain, and asks Kanet
for a year’s commitment before giving him the job. Kanet agrees. After a fitful start, Kanet’s first
fare is a colorful farang ex-pat named JULIE. She’s crossed the wrong people and has leapt into
his tuk-tuk on the run from a group of very angry men.
It seems that Julie has financial troubles of her own. She’s been double crossed by some
shady associates and now the man she owes money to is calling in the debt. That first night in
the tuk-tuk leads to a slow developing relationship between Kanet and Julie as driver and
passenger. Julie moves in the shadowy underworld of Bangkok where sex, drugs and violence
are the currencies of choice, and she comes to rely on the quiet and seemingly non-English
speaking Kanet as her means of travel – and in some cases escape – as she starts unloading

her small stash of drugs to pay off her debt. One night, she runs into the same angry men –
only this time she doesn’t get away. They attack her, but before they can do much, Kanet steps
in and makes quick work of them. Julie is blown away by Kanet’s skills. She soon discovers
that there is more to him than she first thought – he’s fluent in English and has understood her
every word since they met, when she angrily asks why he didn’t say so, with a monk’s
characteristic humble wisdom he responds saying she didn’t ask. Julie learns about his
mother’s situation, and also realizes that his is a tortured soul. She asks if Kanet will come with
her to meet a friend – a friend who happens to own a muay Thai gym. He reluctantly agrees.
The gym owner invites Kanet into to ring to spar with one of his better fighters. Patrons in the
gym start betting on the fighter, Julie bets on Kanet. After not much of a fight, Kanet and Julie
emerge from the gym – much richer than when they entered.
Both see this as an opportunity to solve their respective problems. For Kanet, still living up to
his driving commitment, moonlighting as a fighter is a means to the end. For Julie, she can
quickly settle her debt and move on with her life. The relationship between them continues to
blossom. She even meets his mother in the hospital, where she learns that the reason Kanet
fled to the monastery was because during a street fight twenty years ago, Kanet accidentally
killed a friend of his. Even though Kanet was cleared legally, he couldn’t forgive himself and
sought sanctuary with the monks. As the fights – and victories – mount, the stakes get higher.
Some of Julie’s shady associates begin muscling their way into the scene. With the biggest
fight yet for Kanet looming, he gets the news that his mother has died, and his world comes
crashing down. He quits everything – the driving, the training and the fighting. Julie tries to
reach him but doesn’t have much luck. She realizes the only way he can move on is to settle
the issue of his friend’s death and finally forgive himself once and for all. She finds Kanet,
confesses her love for him and forces him to face those demons – and with her help, he does.
The night of the big fight. Kanet faces the toughest opponent yet. A violent exchange. Kanet is
twenty years older than his opponent and is feeling the reality of it with every blow. The final
round…a haggard Kanet struggles to the center of the ring as the still-fresh younger fighter
closes with him. Arms raised the fighters both come at each other as we fade to black with the
din of the crowd…
We fade up from black back on the entrance to the tuk-tuk company. It is a beehive of activity
as tuk-tuks come and go. Inside, it’s been restored. It looks like a brand-new business. The
office door opens and its Kanet – except he no longer drives for the company – he owns it.
