Portuguese to English: "My Sweet Orange Tree" by José Mauro de Vasconcelos (Alfred A. Knopf Inc. (1970) Opening paragraph
Source text - Portuguese
Totóca vinha me ensinando a vida.
Translation - English
We came down the road hand in hand without hurrying. Totóca was teaching me about life. And I was happy because my older brother was holding my hand and teaching me things. But teaching me things away from home. Because at home I learned by discovering things by myself and doing things by myself. I would make mistakes and by making mistakes I would always wind up getting spanked.
Portuguese to English: "A Hidden Life" by Autran Dourado (Alfred A. Knopf Inc., 1969

Biela felt only a chill, a distant nausea. She couldn’t see very well. The people gathered around her were like milky clouds, fuzzy and too far away. She could hardly tell when they touched her. She sensed vaguely that they had put something on her lips, the taste of oil and the smell of the woods that came on a breeze. She saw — no longer with her eyes, for they were closed to her — some white spots fading rapidly, a very green pasture where the spots changed into almost fluid figures. These figures floated over the green, held by nothing, against a blue sky in which birds circled lazily.
Portuguese to English: Brazilian company's annual report 2008
Translation - English
For us at .., corporate social responsibility means generating return for the shareholders and, at the same time, acting in a sustainable manner, creating real and measurable values for the various interest groups related to us.
We are sure that acting in this manner our company will continue to be strong in the market for many years, following the standards that characterize our century-long history. This report presents our evolution in relation to this commitment.
We used as reference the directives of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) as applied to our business. We broadened the scope of both qualitative and quantitative information in relation to our previous report.
Portuguese to English: Brazilian book on seeds, 2008
Translation - English
The sweet subjectivity of the seeds can be found perhaps in their greater proximity to wool and cotton, while diamonds, rubies and emeralds, as well as platinum, gold and silver, are closer to the mink and sable stoles. The miner and the hunter have something in common as they strip the landscape and the animals: They are closer to the goldsmiths and the furriers. The seeds, in preserving the greater significance of life, are the redemption of jewels. The seeds produce jewelry freed from the forest, and in this book, in the manner of the tales of the Brothers Grimm, they acquire another life. Like the magic walnuts that held the marvelous secrets of gold and silver, these fruits of palm trees and other huge trees — coconuts that are like black onyx, or almonds like ivory — are fairy tale jewels found in the environment.

Bio
I am a retired journalist who lived for many years in Latin America. I have been translating Portuguese to English since 1962 when I first went to Brazil as a foreign correspondent. My translations of two Brazilian novels in the 1960s-70s for Alfred A. Knopf Inc., New York, won wide critical acclaim. I have worked as a translator (Spanish>English, Portuguese>English) for the Inter-American Press Association. And I have done dozens of free-lance translating and interpreting assignments over the years in a variety of fields (petroleum, law, international business, architecture, etc.) I prefer translation work, but will consider interpreting assignments (Portuguese-English only) in the Knoxville, Tennessee, area.
