Biographical and Educational Background and Relevant Translational and/or Professional Experience

Monty lived in Italy for 11 years, from the end of 1985 until the end of 1985. He started his studies in Italian in the city of Padova, Italy, when he arrived there, taking intensive courses at a private language institute, the Istituto Linguistico Bertrand Russell, which he did until the latter part of 1986, by which time he had become fully fluent in the language. At the end of 1986, he enrolled in a 6-year psychoanalytic training program at the Centro Ricerche Biopsichiche, in Padova. All the courses were given in Italian, which gave him the opportunity to become fully acquainted with the technical jargon used in the psychotherapeutic field. About half way through that program, he also enrolled in a 3-year training program in Postural Integration in Rome, given one weekend a month. The course was taught entirely in Italian, affording him the opportunity to completely familiarize himself with language pertaining to biology, anatomy and physiology, and oriental practices dealing with energy medicine, such as shiatsu, acupuncture, and homeopathy, as well as elements of western medicine. From the time he graduated from the Postural Integration training program, in 1992, and continuing until 2004, he was designated as the official translator/interpreter at Postural Integration training seminars given by the International Center for Release and Integration, in collaboration with the Italian cultural association, A.S.P.I.C. (Associazione per lo Sviluppo Psicologico dell’Individuo e della Comunita’) – a post-graduate training institute for psychotherapists, in Italy - where he did simultaneous 2-way interpretation for the director of the institute, Dr. Jack Painter, translating lectures given by him in English into the Italian language, for the trainees and, then, translating the trainees’ questions from the Italian language into English, for Dr. Painter. Between the end of 1995, (when he finally left Italy and moved back to the States) and until the end of 2004, he was requested to make a special trip to Italy 3 times a year, expressly in order to translate Dr. Painter’s lectures and demonstrations at the training seminars).

While living in Italy, Monty also frequently played the guitar, the bass, and sang in music bands, becoming very conversant with how the Italian language was used in that environment, as well.

Monty’s experience with the Swedish language began in the last half of his sophomore year at Queens College (of the City University of New York). After studying the language there for one term, he went over to Sweden for summer vacation and got himself a job in Stockholm, playing guitar in a rock and R&B band in the Gyllene Cirkeln restaurant, for 5 nights a week. During the day, he attended a 3-month intensive course in Swedish, for foreigners. When he returned to the States, in September, he took another year and a half of Swedish at Queens College (as well as a year of Danish – in which he’s not fluent yet). A number of years later, he married a Swedish woman with whom he had a daughter. When their daughter was a youngster, they would often speak Swedish in the house. His translational experience in Swedish consists of having translated various Swedish documents into English from time to time. His current project is to perfect his idiomatic expression in Swedish.
