Dynamic arrays

A dynamic array is an array that doesn’t have a set number of elements defined when it is created. When you declare a dynamic array, it looks like this:

Dim Codes()

The empty parentheses after the variable indicate that it is a dynamic array. This option allows you to wait and determine later how many elements you need. After you know how many you need, you use ReDim.

ReDim Codes(15)

If you find out later that you actually need more elements than that, you can even ReDim again.

ReDim Preserve Codes(20)

The Preserve keyword asks VBScript to preserve any data that had been put into the array previously. If you don’t use Preserve, all the data will be wiped when you use ReDim.

 

UBound

When you are working with dynamic arrays, you don’t always know what the highest array element is, especially if you keep ReDim-ing it. So VBScript offers a solution.

HighElement = UBound(Codes)

After the ReDim, HighElement would hold 15.

 

Multidimensional arrays

Arrays are a list of variables that all use the same name. But arrays can be more than a list. They can be a grid.

Dim GameBoard(10,10)

This array has two dimensions. Instead of thinking of it as a list of values that have each a number, think of this as a grid of variables, each with its own two coordinates. GameBoard(5,5) would be right in the middle of the grid while GameBoard(1,1) would be in the upper left and GameBoard(10,10) would be in the lower right.

And, yes, you can have a three-dimensional array, too, if you want.

Dim Rubics(3,3,3)

A three-dimensional array is a little harder to picture. Think of a cube made of little boxes – three little boxes on a side. Each little box is a separate variable. How many little boxes are there total in a 3 x 3 x 3 cube? That's right, there are 27. Each one is referenced by 3 coordinates.

And, believe it or not, VBScript lets you create four- and five-dimensional arrays – and even more. Don’t ask me to help you picture that because I’m all out of ideas!

Flerdimensjonale datatabeller

En datatabell er en liste med variabler som alle har samme navn. Men en datatabell kan være mer enn en liste. Den kan være et rutenett.

Dim Spillbrett(10,10)

Denne datatabellen har to dimensjoner. I stedet for å betrakte den som en liste med verdier som har hvert sitt nummer, kan du betrakte den som et rutenett med variabler der hver variabel har to koordinater. Spillbrett(5,5) blir da i midten av rutenettet mens Spillbrett(1,1) ligger i øverste venstre hjørne og Spillbrett(10,10) i nederste høyre hjørne.

Og ja, du kan også ha en tredimensjonal datatabell, om du ønsker.

Physics Processing Unit

A physics processing unit (PPU) is a dedicated microprocessor designed to handle the calculations of physics, especially in the physics engine of video games. Examples of calculations involving a PPU might include rigid body dynamics, soft body dynamics, collision detection, fluid dynamics, hair and clothing simulation, finite element analysis, and fracturing of objects. The idea is that specialized processors offload time consuming tasks from a computer's CPU, much like how a GPU performs graphics operations in the main CPU's place.

The first PPUs were the SPARTA and HELLAS .

The term was coined by Ageia's marketing to describe their PhysX chip to consumers. Several other technologies in the CPU-GPU spectrum have some features in common with it, although Ageia's solution is the only complete one designed, marketed, supported, and placed within a system exclusively as a PPU.
