Italian to English: Trekking in Costiera Amalfitana/Hiking along the Amalfi Coast Detailed field: Tourism & Travel

Windmill valley
The ancient Republic of Amalfi was once renowned not only as the oldest marine republic, but also for the famous “Amalfi paper,” which is produced in the Windmill Valley.
The name of the Valley comes from the ancient site of the mills that were used to prepare dough products.
In the Middle Ages, a few mills were converted into paper mills, and they started to produce valuable paper.
The river Canneto runs through the Windmill Valley. This watercourse fed the machines that reduced white coloured cotton rags, flax and hemp to a pulp, which was subsequently reworked into paper, using a technique that originated in China, and perfected by the people of Amalfi.
It is nowadays considered valuable paper, and is used for special occasions, such as wedding invitations.
You can walk to the Windmill Valley from Ravello, starting with a visit to the Duomo, Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone (please consult the section THE AMALFI COAST).
The walk also goes through the town of Scala.
Scala is considered the oldest town of the Amalfi Coast. Here was born Gerardo Sasso, founder of the Knights of Malta.
Scala is twinned with Brooklyn, New York. Every year there is a parade “New York meets Scala.” In Scala’s main square there is a sculpture by Silvio Amelio, a monument dedicated to the memory of the victims of that terrible day in New York, September 11th 2001.
The Windmill Valley is a path filled with history, and is a peaceful, tranquil place, where the soul can find freedom and peace.
At the end of the walk, we can visit the Museum of Paper in Amalfi.
The path of the Gods
One of the most spectacular paths on the Amalfi coast is the Path of the Gods.
The Path of the Gods was an old mule track used to get to Positano.
The name itself brings to mind a mythological landscape, where the traveller can wander along a path in the company of the Gods.
It is a show of incomparable beauty, unparalleled views, that runs from Praiano, Positano all the way to the Isle of Capri.
The Path of the Gods is characterised by typical Mediterranean vegetation, caves and deep limestone coves.

Ingredienti

Italian to English: Roesler home Detailed field: Architecture
Translation - English Nestled between two stylish areas in São Paulo – Pinheiros and Jardim Europa – is the Roesler family villa. This is a remake by Ruy Ohtake, a distinguished name in contemporary Brazilian architecture. Ohtake is famous for his daring projects, where he uses organic forms and sharp colours, as well as his free spirit, inherited from his mother Tomie Ohtake, an important Brazilian artist. This project dates back to 2007, and the architect desired complete freedom: “I like his audacity,” says Daniel Roesler, owner of the prominent Nara Roesler Contemporary Art Gallery in São Paulo. The minimalist furniture partly dates back to the Seventies and was inherited from Daniel’s father, an architect from Recife, a city in Northeast Brazil, and some of the pieces were designed by himself. There are, of course, works of art spread around the living room, where one entire wall is dedicated exclusively to the works of Antonio Dias. Toward the back of the room, in the office area, is a painting by Helio Oiticica, the top Brazilian avant-garde artist – the Nara Roesler Gallery possesses a large collection of his works. Along the living room wall there is a free-form opening in the exposed concrete (another material which the architect makes great use of), outlining the glass door to the large kitchen, home to the grand daily movements of the São Paulo family: “we like living with the lightness of the curves” Daniel tell us.

Translation - English This section will compare the five sequences under scrutiny, examining both the technical/expressive aspects (such as depth of field, which is strictly connected to the choice of field/view, and light) as well as narrative/descriptive aspects (such as point-of-view, which is tied to the viewer’s connection with the characters, the montage and the camera’s movements). Occasionally, the main differences between the five sequences will be examined, and their meaning in the context of the different narrative situations will be highlighted.
Furthermore, a brief mention of the soundtrack will be made, as its contribution is fundamental to the construction and development of the scene. However, the music will not be analysed with the competence of an expert; instead, its growing and diminishing intensity, as well as its complete absence will be acknowledged.
The first sequence to be analysed will be Spellbound’s “Gabriel Valley” sequence: as it is the least examined by the critics, more detailed attention will be devoted to it.
The analysis of technical and narrative elements will first be directed toward the mechanism of the creation of suspense through the cinematic medium, and secondly to how different direction choices could produce the same level of suspense.
