My name is Mai Chou Thao. I came to the United States at the age of seven. I grew up in a traditional Hmong family. I learned how to write and read in Hmong at the age of 9. I've been using this skills since then.
I started working in office environments with professions when I was in high school. I worked with Washington Mutual Bank for two years doing telling and customer service. I was able to use my Hmong speaking skills to use while working there.
After high school I entered into college at CSU Fresno. While going to school there, I work with Fresno CORAL, a nonprofit program. This program help Fresno Unified School District by providing after school programs. I am one of their tutors. Most of my students, and this year, all of my students were Hmong. I communicated in Hmong with the parents and students on a daily basis. Working with Fresno CORAL taught me to be my own boss because I was given the opportunity to set up my own schedule with the parents and students.
This year, I did a lot of soul searching and I realize that I enjoy using Hmong in every way possible. Now, I am working on improving my Hmong speaking and writing skills. I will also get a certificate later on in the near future to be a certified translator.
I hope that by sharing some personal information about myself will let you know what kind of a person I am. I also hope to work with you soon.
