English to Maltese: Early Settlers in Malta
Source text - English
The earliest settlers arrived from Sicily in c. 5500 B.C. and brought with them livestock and other agricultural know how. In the late Neolithic, the inhabitants of Malta developed a unique culture based on construction of numerous temples built throughout Malta. Temples such as those at Bugibba and tal-Qadi are situated in strategic position overlooking important harbours. This is reflective of the importance given to the sea by Malta’s late Neolithic inhabitants. This so called Temple Culture was brought to an abrupt end as is attested by the use of the Tarxien Temple as a late Bronze Age burial site. The inhabitant of late Bronze Age Malta chose strategic sites on promontories overlooking the sea. One such example is the fortified site of Borg in-Nadur located in modern Birzebbuga. Sometime in the 8th century B. C. Pheonician seafarers started to frequent the Islands. They found the Harbour of Marsaxlokk in the South-East of Malta an ideal haven for their ships crossing between East and West. Over the years, they developed a sanctuary on a hill overlooking Marsaxlokk. With the rise of Carthage as a Mediterranean power the Maltese Islands were colonized and a series of settlements were established throughout the Islands. It would seem that the economy of the Island during the Punic period was based on agriculture and trade.
Translation - Maltese L-ewwel abitanti f’Malta waslu minn Sqallija madwar 5500 Q.K. u ġabu magħhom fauna kif ukoll metodi tal-ħidma fl-agrikultura. Lejn l-aħħar tal-perjodu Neolitiku, l-abitanti ta’ Malta ħolqu kultura unika msejsa fuq il-bini ta’ numru ta’ tempji mibnija madwar il-gżira. Tempji bħal dawk ta’ Buġibba u tal-Qadi nbnew fuq għoljiet iħarsu fuq portijiet importanti. Din tirrifletti l-importanza li l-abitanti Neolitiċi f’Malta kienu jagħtu lill-baħar. Din il-Kultura tat-Tempji ntemmet ħesrem u ta’ dan huwa xhieda s-sit f’Hal Tarxien li kien jintuża fl-aħħar tal-perjodu tal-Bronż. L-abitanti tal-Gżira f’dan il-perjodu għażlu mkejjen fuq promontorji għal fuq il-baħar. Eżempju ċar ta’ dan huwa s-sit fortifikat ta’ Borġ in-Nadur li jinsab f’dak li llum huwa Birżebbuġa. F’xi żmien fis-seklu tmienja Q. K. l-Feniċi bdew jiffrekwentaw il-Gżejjer. Fix-Xlokk ta’ Malta sabu l-port ta’ Marsaxlokk li kien oasi biex fih jistkennu l-qxur tal-baħar tagħhom li kienu jaqsmu mill-Lvant għall-Punent tal-Mediterran. Matul iż-żminijiet, bnew santwarju fuq l-għolja li tħares għal fuq Marsaxlokk. Meta Kartaġni bdiet tissaħħaħ fil-poter ġewwa l-Mediterran, Malta waqgħet f’idejhom u bdew jinbnew bħal villaġġi żgħar madwar il-Gżejjer. Ta’ min jaħseb li fi żminijiet Puniċi, l-ekonomija tal-gżejjer Maltin kienet ibbażata fuq l-agrikoltura u kummerċ.
Maltese to English: Il-Kavallieri ta' l-Ordni ta' San Gwann
Source text - Maltese Pirati kienu jużaw il-Portijiet ta’ Malta biex jippjanaw l-vjaġġi tagħhom lejn bosta pajjiżi fil-Mediterran. Parti kbira mill-abitanti tal-Birgu kienu jiddependu minn din l-attivita marittima maħluqa minn pirati u kursara. L-istess ġara meta l-Ordni tal-Kavallieri ta’ San Gwann waslu f’Malta fl-1530. Il-Kavallieri sabu kenn madwar il-belt marittima tal-Birgu fejn baqgħu sakemm mxew lejn il-Belt Valletta fl-1571. L-għotja tal-Gżejjer Maltin lill-Ordni ta’ San Gwann fl-1530 minn Karlu V kienet strateġija biex tinżamm l-espansjoni tat-Torok Ottomani fil-Mediterran. Fl-1565 il-forzi Ottomani taħt it-tmexxija tal-Viżier Lala Mustafa Pasha u tal-Kmandant Navali Suprem Piyale Pasha, taw bidu għal-assedju f’Malta lil Kavallieri u l-Maltin ġewwa l-Birgu, l-Isla u forti Sant’Iermu fit-tarf ta’ dik li illum hija l-Belt Valletta. Wara tlett xhur ta’ taqbid qalil u ta’ telf ta’ ħajjiet għaż-żewġ naħat, l-għajnuna waslet minn Sqallija. Il-bqija tal-ħakma ta’ l-Ordni ta’ San Gwann kienet tikkonsisti minn bini ta’ fortifikazzjonijiet, palazzi residenzjali u monumenti oħrajn.
Translation - English The Maltese harbours found prompt employment with the Order of St. John upon their arrival in 1530. The Knights settled around theOld Map of Malta maritime city of Birgu where they were to remain until their move to Valletta in 1571. The handing over of the Islands to the Order of St. John in 1530 was part of Charles V’s strategy to counter Ottoman expansion in the Mediterranean. In 1565 the Ottoman forces under the leadership of Vizier Lala Mustafa Pasha and the supreme naval commander Piyale Pasha laid siege to the Christian forces inside the cities of Birgu, Senglea and Fort St.Elmo on the tip of what is today Valletta. Following three months of fierce fighting and great loss of lives for both sides, the Order of St. John defeated the Ottoman Turks with the help of a relief force sent from Sicily. The rest of the Order’s staying on Malta was characterized by the building of extensive fortifications, palatial residences and other monuments. This Siege left its impact on the Maltese population. Whereas in 1530 there was an estimate of 33,000 souls, in 1565 it dwindled to 10,000. The general population reprised until mid-18th century where the population reached 100,000 in Malta and 10,000 in Gozo.
