I gained a BA (hons) Religious Studies and Italian in from Cardiff University in 2006 and then spent a year working for a multi national financial firm as an Associate Accounts Coordinator. During this time I was able to use my Italian when communicating with the Italian office and also translating invoices/letters/emails/delivery notes for colleagues. I also worked evenings and weekends in the Cardiff University libraries which enabled me to use my language skills in a more conversational manner. In September 2007 I started my PGCE (Post Compulsory Education and Training). I completed this, with Distinction, in June 2008. I was also rewarded Student of the Year. At the moment I am working as a learning support worker and am due to start work as a Religious Studies lecturer in a FE College in November. I would like to take on casual translating work as a way for me to maintian my language skills. Sadly there is not much call for Italian teachers in the Post Compulsory Sector.
The Italian part of my degree involved much translation, from Italian to English, but mostly English to Italian to develop use of idioms and give us a better knowledge of the language. I was also required to study aspects of Italian culture (history, Italian Cinema, Boccaccio), and this along side living, working and studying in Italy for 9 months means I have a good working knowledge of the country and its language.
I am extremely hard working and self motivated and always meet deadlines.
I see the opportunity to translate as a learning curve which will improve my language and also broaden my experiences. I therefore welcome any feedback on work which I undertake and would strive to use any advice given in future translations.
