Resty Taruc (Most Outstanding Filipino Canadian in the United States & Canada 2002)

Born on June 10, 1948 in Gapan, Nueva Ecija, Philippines, Resty
Taruc is the fifth among the eleven children of the late Jose
Taruc, Sr. and Rebecca Malgapo. Being a consistent honor
student, Resty obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Commerce at
Jose Rizal College, majoring in Economics andManagement. He
received numerous scholastic and leadership awards including
"Most Outstanding Student" of JRC, "Best Orator" and gold
medalist of the Private Schools Athletic Association Oratorial
Contest, to name a few.

Driven by his ambition to go abroad and his strong determination
to explore new challenges in life, Resty immigrated to Winnipeg,
Manitoba, Canada on July 21, 1974. He then pursued hs post
graduate studies in management and administration at the
University of Manitoba. While studying at the university, he got his
first job at Versatile Farm Equipment Manufacturing Company as
a production planner and was promoted to a number of senior
positions over the years of his employment with the company.
Resty also put up the first Filipino radio program in Winnipeg on
CKJS radio. His involvement with the Filipino community started
at the same year he arrived in Winnipeg when he was recruited by
the president of the Philippine Association of Manitoba. From that
time on, he actively partcipated in various activites and assumed different key positions in the organization to
further the interests and aspirations of the Filipino-Canadian community.

Among other things, Resty's significant community accomplishments include the following: Securing capital
funding approval and realization of the FILCASA HOUSING, a major housing complex for the
Filipino-Canadian seniors in Winnipeg; initiating and chairing the revival of the National Council of Canadian
Filipino Associations, (formerly known as the United Council of Filipino Associations in Canada);
Organizing the United Filipino-Canadian Seniors of Manitoba, an umbrella organization for Filipino-Canadian
seniors; Establishing the Federation of Filipino Workers in Manitoba; chairing the annual celebration of
Philippine Heritage Week, in commemoration of the Philippine Independence for several years; and
coordinating the Philippine Pavilion (Nayong Pilipino) during Folklorama Week Festival of Nations from time
to time. As past president of the Philippine Association of Manitoba, Resty has become one of the most
prominent and highly respected Filipino-Canadian community leaders in Manitoba. Resty was appointed
executive director of the Manitoba Multicultural Grants Advisory Council, an arms length funding umbrella that
provided funding assistance to various ethnocultural community organizations in the province. He was also
selected as a member of The City of Winnipeg Task Force on Diversity, a special committee that reported to
the Mayor of the City of Winnipeg. Its main goals are to ensure that the City of Winnpeg's staff and programs
meet the needs of a changing population and to ensure effective participation of communities in matters that
affect them. As president of the Philippine - Canadian Centre of Manitoba, Resty's biggest challenge from
the community is the realization of the new Philippine Canadian Cultural Centre in the province. The Centre is
indeed a long standing goal of the Filipino-Canadian community to have a building that will accommodate the
cultural needs of Filipino-Canadians in Manitoba. Under his leadership and with the overwhelming support
from the community and three levels of government, he is certain that the Centre will come to fruition in the not
too distant future. This is a remarkable contribution to the Filipino-Canadian community and will leave an
indelible mark on the minds and hearts of Filipino-Canadians for a long period of time.

Furthermore, Resty was recently selected as one of the Most Outstanding Filipino Canadians for 2001 by
the Executive Committee of the Binibining Pilipinas of the World held in Toronto.

Resty met his beautiful wife Rose Aurelio Sindayen in Winnipeg and they are blessed with two sons, Mac, 24
and Donald, 22. Mac obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Science at the University of Manitoba and Donald has
recently completed his Bachelor's Degree in Commerce at the same university. Resty and Rose celebrated
their 25th wedding anniversary last year. #
