Source text - English Types of drugs.
The drugs used for reflux work in different ways. According to the severity of your symptoms, you may be asked to take one or more of the following:
Antacids. They help neutralize the stomach acid. The work fast, but they are only helpful for mild reflux.
H2 Blockers. They may make the stomach produce less acid.
Proton Pump inhibitors ( PPI). They also make the stomach produce less acid, but they are stronger than the H2 blockers.
Prokinetic. They strengthen the esophagus squeezing action and tighten the lower esophageal sphincter. Often, they are used in conjunction with the H2 blockers. Some of these drugs also make the stomach empty faster.
