Source text - English The elite of Amsterdam, at this moment the richest city in the world, needed a monumental history painting for their grandiose and exceptionally white town hall. Their first choice for the job, Govert Flinck, had unexpectedly died. So they turned to his erstwhile master, Rembrandt van Rijn, who in his time had created history of heart-stopping power. Why should he not do so again? The town hall picture would be one of a series illustrating the history of the remote ancestors of the Dutch, the ancient Batavians. Together the cycle of histories would remind Amsterdammers (who in their splendour were apt to yawn at instructions) that, while they were now themselves masters of an empire, their history began with an act of virtuous insurrection against the arrogance of the Roman Empire. Rembrandt’s commission would be the most important, for it would show the Batavian leader Claudius Civilis at the very moment of swearing his brethren to pledge their lives to the liberty of the Fatherland. So the job could hardly have been more propitious. If it succeeded, it would wipe the smirk off the faces of those who had written him off as an uncouth has-been. “The Conspiracy of the Batavians under Claudius Civilis” would be his “Last Supper”, his “School of Athens”, the one for which he would always be revered and remembered. And it would net him a cool 1000 guilders.
So Rembrandt pulled out all the stops. Everything he had ever learned about painted storytelling – the scooping of deep space, the drama of selective lighting, the emotive weight of loaded pigment – went into the enormous picture.
The result was a history painting like none that had been seen before: attack painting, raw and barbaric, with coats of paint trowelled on, allowed to puddle and crust, then gouged back. And it is a picture, above all, of light; but the opposite kind of light from Vermeer’s crystal visions that bath the humdrum in pellucid grace. Rembrandt’s sallow light burns dangerously, phosphorically. It is a light from which to stand back or risk a scorching.
For the ruined painter, it was a gamble at the edge. Everyone knew about Rembrandt’s ruffian audacity; his regrettable imperviousness to the niceties of decorum, personal and professional. But with all those reservations, the civic worthies must still have been unprepared for what they got from his hand. They let it hang in the town hall for a few months in 1662, thinking perhaps that it was better to have an embarrassment than a vacancy.

Tak więc Rembrandt postarał się najbardziej jak tylko mógł. Wszystko, czego się kiedykolwiek nauczył o opowiadaniu historii w malarstwie – wydobywanie głębokiej przestrzeni, dramaturgia światła, emotywny wymiar użytego pigmentu – znalazło wyraz w tym ogromnych rozmiarów obrazie.
W rezultacie powstało dzieło niepodobne do żadnego z wcześniejszych obrazów historycznych: dzieło napastliwe, surowe i barbarzyńskie, z rozprowadzonymi szeroko połaciami farby, której pozwolono zakrzepnąć, by na nowo przeryć żłobieniami. Ale co tu przede wszystkim zostało przedstawione, to światło; nie taki to wszak rodzaj światła jak ten z przejrzystych wizji Vermeera, w których prozaiczność skąpana jest w krystalicznej poświacie. Ziemisto-żółte światło Rembrandta jest niebezpiecznie gorące, fosforyzujące. To jest światło, od którego lepiej stanąć z dala, inaczej ryzykuje się oparzenie.
Dla zrujnowanego malarza to jak balansowanie na krawędzi. Znane było wszystkim zuchwalstwo Rembrandta; jego godna pożałowania odporność na subtelności decorum, tak w życiu prywatnym, jak w profesji. Ale pomimo tej świadomości, zacni obywatele nie do końca musieli zdawać sobie sprawę, jakie dzieło mogą otrzymać. Source text - Polish Żupan – podstawowy element stroju polskiego
Dopiero w drugiej ćwierci XVI w. zaczął zdobywać sobie popularność ubiór, który rozpowszechnił się po połowie stulecia, a później stał się podstawowym elementem stroju polskiego, a mianowicie żupan – obcisły górą a dołem rozkloszowany, zapinany od pasa po szyję na rząd drobnych, często biżuteryjnych, guzów kaftan spodni. Rękawy żupana u góry szersze, zwężały się do dłoni, a przy szyi był on wykończony kołnierzykiem-stójką. Zwykle noszono go jako ubiór spodni, ale przy mniej oficjalnych okazjach również samodzielnie. Pochodzenie żupana nie jest do końca wyjaśnione. Najprawdopodobniej wykształcił się on z noszonego od XIV w. w całej Europie średniowiecznego rycerskiego kaftana tzw. jupon, w Polsce określanego jako jopula, który był krojony z czterech części, dopasowanych górą, a od pasa w dół rozszerzanych. Dołem był dodatkowo poszerzany klinami. Rękawy, tak jak później u żupana, dla wygody były wszywane z podkrojem pachy, co odróżniało krawiectwo europejskie od wschodniego, gdzie nie stosowano podkrojów. Strój ten był noszony w Polsce jeszcze na początku XVI w., choć nie występował już w innych krajach europejskich; określano go wtedy jako żupica.
W 2. połowie XVI w. i na pocz. XVII w. w wyglądzie żupana pojawiły się pewne elementy upodabniające go do węgierskiego dołomana (dolman), m.in. jedna poła zachodząca ukośnie na drugą, kołnierzyk stójka wyższy z tyłu i zaokrąglone mankiety zachodzące na wierzch dłoni.
Dodatki do stroju polskiego w XVI i XVII wieku
W 1. połowie XVI w. często wraz z żupicami noszono jeszcze obcisłe średniowieczne nogawice. Jednakże w 2. połowie stulecia wraz żupanem popularność zyskały obcisłe spodnie sukienne, wzorowane na węgierskich i nazywane „husarskimi”, które były jeszcze powszechnie noszone w 1. połowie XVII wieku. Zwykle sięgały one za kolano lub do połowy łydki i były wpuszczane w wywodzące się ze wschodu wysokie buty z cholewami, zwykle długimi z przodu zakrywającymi kolano, a z tyłu krótszymi. Noszono jednak również cholewki krótkie nad kostkę, sznurowane po bokach. Obuwie tego typu najchętniej wykonywano z miękkiej, dobrze układającej się na stopie skórki (szczególnie modny był czerwony lub żółty safian). Ich noski były szpiczaste, a zamiast obcasów przybijano metalowe podkówki. Ten typ obuwia określany był jako baczmagi.
W 2. połowie XVI wieku najpopularniejszym nakryciem głowy stały się kołpaki: futrzane lub aksamitne, sukienne albo filcowe wykończone szerokim, niekiedy nacinanym otokiem z futra i zdobione dekoracyjną kitą z piór, przypiętą za pomocą kosztownej egrety. Modne były również niskie, cylindryczne filcowe czarne czapki z odwiniętym i naciętym po bokach brzegiem, pochodzące z Węgier i określane u nas jako magierki, bądź na cześć króla Stefana Batorego jako batorówki. Noszono je zawsze z egretą z czaplich lub żurawich piór.
Bardzo istotnym elementem męskiego wyglądu była również fryzura i zarost. Wzorem węgierskim i tureckim Polacy już w XVI w. strzygli włosy krótko i podgalali z tyłu głowę, pozostawiając na czubku bujniejszą czuprynę. W XVII w. pod wpływem kozackim młodzi mężczyźni i wojskowi golili głowę pozostawiając na czubku jedynie długi kosmyk włosów tzw. sieledzieć lub osełedec. Niezależnie od wieku obowiązywały wąsy, natomiast starsi mężczyźni zapuszczali również brodę, którą staranie podcinano nadając jej łopatowaty kształt.
Translation - English Żupan – a basic element of Polish dress
It was only in the second quarter of the sixteenth century when the basic element of the Polish man’s dress – the żupan started being used. That was an under caftan tight at the top and widened with gussets down the waist, buttoned from top to waist with a row of small and often very ornamental buttons. Its sleeves were looser at the top and tapered towards the palm; and around the neck it had a mandarin collar. Used usually as a bottom caftan, it could have been worn alone on the less official occasions. Its origin is not fully confirmed. The mediaeval knight’s caftan called jupon, common in the whole Europe from the fourteenth century, might have been its prototype. In Poland it had a name jopula and was cut of four parts that were close-fitting at the top and widened down the bottom with the extra gussets. Sleeves used to have their arm-holes carefully calculated for the convenience purposes – the same feature as the żupan had, which made European tailoring different from the oriental one. In the early sixteenth century jopula, unlike in the other countries, was still worn in Poland, but known under the different name – żupica.
In the second half of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth century żupan started being similar to Hungarian dress the dolman (in Poland called dołoman) as the new features appeared, such as: one side of the front overlapping the other one, mandarin collar higher on the back, and rounded off cuffs covering part of the palm.
Polish dress accessories in the sixteenth and the seventeenth century
In the first half of the sixteenth century the żupica was very often accompanied by the mediaeval tight hose which were still in use. In the second half of the century they were replaced with tight trousers sewn of cloth, patterned after Hungarian fashion, and called hussar’s trousers; they kept being worn till the mid-seventeenth century. The legs of these trousers were usually long down to the middle of a calf or just below knee, and tucked into high top boots of eastern origin. Boots worn at that time could have been either higher from the front, covering a knee, and shorter on the back, or quite short, just above an ankle, tied with lace on sides. The latter type of shoes was preferably made of soft and flexible leather (especially desirable was red or yellow one made of goat-skin – saffian). They had pointed fronts, and in the place of the heels metal horseshoes were nailed. Poles called this type of shoes baczmagi.
The type of headgear that became most popular in the second half of the sixteenth century was kołpak, which could have been made of fur, velvet, cloth or felt, and their wide fur band was embellished with a bunch of feathers pinned with a jewelry aigrette. A low and cylindrical cap of Hungarian origin, made of black felt and trimmed with a band of the same material slit on the side was also in fashion. Always accompanied by a bunch of egret or crane feathers, it was called in Polish either magierka or batorówka, in honor of the King Stephen Báthory.
A very important feature of man’s appearance was the style of head and facial hair. In the sixteenth century Poles, according to the Hungarian and Turkish pattern, trimmed their hair short, with the nape shaved to the skin, leaving longer hair only on the very top of the head. In the seventeenth century young or military men, influenced by the Cossacks, were shaving their heads bald with a long strand of hair left, so-called sieledzieć or osełedec. It was obligatory for all the men to wear a moustache, elder ones also grew a beard that was regularly trimmed, with a great care taken to keep it in a spade-like shape.

Source text - Polish W okresie nowożytnym powszechny był zwyczaj korzystania z pierwowzorów graficznych przy tworzeniu dzieł sztuki i rzemiosła artystycznego. Książki ilustrowane grafikami, dostępne dla szerokiego kręgu odbiorców, popularyzowały wzorce ikonograficzne. Na ziemiach polskich proces ten rozpoczął się w pierwszej połowie XV w. i był kontynuowany w kolejnych stuleciach. Z drzeworytów, miedziorytów czy akwafort korzystali zarówno twórcy wybitni (np. Tomasz Dolabella), jak i artyści prowincjonalni, dziś anonimowi.
Scena „Zesłania Ducha Świętego” znalazła liczne realizacje plastyczne: była tematem samodzielnych przedstawień lub elementem większych cyklów – Różańca, Koronki Imienia Jezus, Credo lub modlitwy Ojcze nasz. Najwięcej jej ujęć powstało w oparciu o grafikę Piotra Pawła Rubensa rytowaną przez Cornelisa Galle w 1614 roku. Przyczyny popularności grafiki Rubensa jako pierwowzoru polskich barokowych przedstawień Pięćdziesiątnicy były wielorakie: swoista „modą” na prace tego artysty, komercyjny charakter działań jego szkoły graficznej (zatrudnianie licznych wysokiej klasy rytowników – rodziny de Jode, de Passe, Wierix, czy Galle, produkcja dużej liczby odbitek), udokumentowana obecność grafik Rubensa w polskich kolekcjach w XVII wieku, częste w 1 poł. tego stulecia podróże Polaków do Antwerpii połączone z wizytą w pracowni artysty i zakupem jego dzieł. Bardziej bezpośrednią przyczyną popularności wspomnianego wzorca graficznego był jednak fakt, że rycina ilustrowała Mszał rzymski, wydany przez antwerpską Officina Plantiniana.
Sobór Trydencki na ostatniej sesji (1563) ogłosił dekret o wydaniu katechizmu, brewiarza i mszału. Ten ostatni, zatwierdzony w 1570 r., podawał ujednoliconą, powszechnie nakazaną praktykę liturgiczną, a synod piotrkowski (1577) uczynił ją obowiązującą w diecezjach polskich. Biskupi wymagali, aby w każdej parafii znajdował się egzemplarz mszału zatwierdzonego przez papieża Piusa V. Wobec bardzo nielicznych wydań krajowych, do Polski zaczęły napływać obce mszały, w tym drukowane w oficynach antwerpskich. To one właśnie były najpewniej źródłem ikonografii omówionych przedstawień Pięćdziesiątnicy.
Powszechny zwyczaj korzystania z pierwowzorów graficznych wskazuje, że od sztuki kościelnej okresu nowożytnego nie oczekiwano oryginalności w dzisiejszym rozumieniu. Miała ona charakter służebny, podporządkowany ostatecznemu celowi jakim jest zbawienie człowieka. Sobór trydencki przypomniał o jej zadaniach dydaktycznych i pedagogicznych, nie lekceważąc jej elementu emocjonalnego, pobudzającego pobożność. Istotna była czytelna forma, przejrzysta i nie wzbudzająca wątpliwości interpretacyjnych treść, zawierająca element katechezy i poruszająca serce. Wzór w postaci łączącej te elementy grafiki – z Norymbergi, Antwerpii, czy Augsburga – wydawał się bardzo użyteczny. Przy czym praktyka posługiwania się rycinami nie zubożyła wcale ikonografii przedstawień. Wielość i różnorodność wzorów była na tyle dużą, że w Polsce na poszczególnych rycinach wzorowano jedno lub najwyżej kilka dzieł. Obrazy czerpiące z grafiki Rubensa stanowiły tu pewien wyjątek. Zatem omówione przedstawienia Pięćdziesiątnicy, inspirowane rycinami, prezentowały w gruncie rzeczy duże bogactwo form.
Translation - English The practice of using graphic prototypes while creating works of art and handicraft had been very common in Early Modern times. Books illustrated with engravings, which had been within the reach of a wide range of viewers, kept making their iconographic prototypes popular. In Poland this process began in the 1st half of the 15th century and was continued throughout following centuries. Both outstanding artists (e.g. Thomas Dolabella) and provincial ones, who remain anonymous to us, would use woodcuts, copperplates and etchings.
The “Descent of the Holy Spirit” scene had numerous depictions: some of them were individual, some were parts of larger cycles, like Rosary, Chaplet of the Holy Name, Credo or the Our Father prayer. The greatest number of them were inspired by the Peter Paul Rubens’s composition (engraved by Cornelis Galle in 1614). There are various reasons for such popularity of the engraving by Rubens as a prototype of Polish Baroque depictions of the Pentecost : the kind of fashion for his works of art, the commercial character of his engraver’s school (it employed many high class engravers, like de Jode family, de Passe, Wierix or Galle, and produced a large number of prints), the presence of Rubens’s engravings in Polish collections of 17th century, the frequent visits to Antwerp, which the Poles made in the 1st half of the century, and purchases of the Rubens’s works from his studio. The direct reason, however, must have been the fact that the Pentecost by Rubens illustrated the Roman missal published by Officina Plantiniana in Antwerp.
The Council of Trent during its last session (1563) issued a decree about a new catechism, breviary, and missal. The latter one, approved in 1570, imposed the unified liturgical practice. It had been made obligatory for Polish dioceses by Synod of Piotrków (1577). Bishops required that in every parish church was the copy of the missal endorsed by the Pope Pius V. Since the local editions were scarce, copies were imported from abroad, including Antwerp. They were certainly the ones that provided the iconographic source for the depiction of Pentecost herein quoted.
The common practice of using graphic prototypes shows that originality, in the today’s meaning of the word, was not the most desirable feature of the religious art.
It had an ancillary character, subordinated to the final aim of humankind, which is redemption. The Council of Trent reminded of its didactic purposes, not forgetting, though, about its emotive function which were to stimulate devotion to God. What mattered was the clear form and content, easy to read and interpret, including some elements of preaching and moving the heart. The pattern combining all these functions – i.e. an engraving from Nuremberg, Antwerp or Augsburg – seemed to be very useful. This practice, though, did not restrict iconography of depictions. In Poland one pattern served for just a few depictions thanks to the large amount of graphic prototypes and their diversity. The only exception is the Rubens’s engraving. Consequently, the Pentecost scenes, inspired by engravings herein dwelled upon, presented indeed the remarkable abundance of forms.
English to Polish: XVI-wieczne nagrobki
Source text - English In seeking to reassert her spiritual authority, the Church of Rome turned to art. In 1563, the Council of Trent issued a declaration concerning images, which stipulated that immodesty were not acceptable in churches. Furthermore, the Catholic Church laid much of the blame for the growth of unorthodox views on humanism and other aspects of Renaissance ideology. This new mood of austerity gave rise to a number of treatises on decorum in art, which began to adopt moral overtones. Consequently, decorum was equated with decency and even with the appropriateness of location of a work. However, the surprising fact is that child monuments were located in the presbytery at all, since this is the most prestigious part of a church – close to the altar, where Mass is celebrated. As Ariès states: It is true that there was a hierarchy of honour that extended from the… high altar to the edge of the cemetery… all that counted was the distance from the spiritual centre of the ecclesiastical complex. In his survey of burials in France, Ariès found that few children were actually buried inside a church – most, including the children of the nobility, were buried in the cemetery alongside the poor. Consequently, this provides evidence of the high regard in which children were held in the sixteenth century in Poland.
The two earliest examples of a deceased child depicted as a reclining putto are the sculpted versions on the monuments to Jan Aleksander Tarnowski in Tarnów and Ludwik Szydłowiecki in Opatów. The similarities between these two effigies have been noted and the assertion made that one is dependent on the other. Here a problem arises because, although the dates for Ludwik are known (he died in 1525 and this is the date on the monument), there has been much debate over the date of the Jan Aleksander monument, despite the date of death on the monument of 1515. A number of factors have served to confuse the debate, not least the desire by various authorities to fit the date to their proposed attribution. In particular, the conviction that Padovano was the sculptor has resulted in a belief that the monument was made in 1530-35. However, A. M. in her monograph on Padovano does not include the monument in his works and states, …no persuasive attributions have been put forward in the past and I have none to offer now… prudence is best served by declining to give these works an attribution. Once the question of attribution is set aside, the date for the erection of the monument more logically follows close on the death of the child as is the case elsewhere.
There are other confusing factors, such as the fact that the present site for the child’s effigy is on the double monument to two adult Tarnowskis in St Anne’s chapel, which was assembled there in 1561 and is referred to as the tomb of the Three Tarnowskis. This has led some to regard it as a single monument. Another point of confusion is the inscription, which refers to his father as castellan of Kraków, a title that was conferred on Jan Amor II (‘Magnus’) in 1536. Consequently the monument was assumed to have been erected after this date.
When Padovano began work on the tomb of Jan Amor II in 1561, existing monuments were moved from the presbytery to make room for it. This included the monument for Jan Amor Młodszy and his son Jan Amor I, now thought to have been a double-tier monument – the first in Poland. Padovano reassembled the monument in its present arrangement in order to fit into the wall space of its new location. At the same time he added new inscription plaques and the effigy of the child. F.R. suggests that originally it was a suspended monument and the slab on which the child is lying was the top part of a sarcophagus, the lower part being a pedestal with the original inscription. During the removal, this was destroyed and so a new inscription was made.
We do not know – and may never know – who the sculptor was, though clearly it was an Italian or Italian trained master of some accomplishment. Furthermore, in comparing the range of reclining putto monuments, in order to trace the development of the motif, this is the only one in which the eyes are open. The child is actually smiling as though caught at the moment of wakening from a happy slumber. Subsequent versions show the child asleep.
The modelling of the body, skill of execution, convincing portrayal of anatomy and the design of the pose, are all indicative of the Florentine Renaissance style. D.S. has pointed out the striking similarity to the child depicted in a relief by Antonio Lombardo in Cappella del Santo, S. Antonio, Padua. Similarly, K.W. noted a close analogy between the Ludwik effigy and a terracotta putto dormiente in the Berlin Staatliches Museum, which she claims was associated by Venturi with Leonardo da Vinci. What all this indicates is that both sculptures are clearly Italianate and in the Renaissance style. Despite similarities in form, style and conception, they are clearly not by the same sculptor. The body of little Ludwik has greater lassitude, emphasising his profound sleep, while his features are sharper and his eyes firmly closed. Both have their right leg bent under them but, while Jan Aleksander’s left leg is straight, Ludwik’s is also bent in a pose that prefigures the effigy of Zygmunt I in Wawel cathedral. Jan Alexander is shown wakening from the sleep of death, at the moment of resurrection, hence his smiling face. Ludwik remains in the deep sleep of death with the hope of resurrection yet to be fulfilled.
The message conveyed by these monuments is simple, sleep (or emergence from) is juxtaposed with death by placing the sculpted figures on a sarcophagus. There are no other symbols of death because effectively they are not needed. The power of the message lies in the superb execution of the works and their composition. Subsequent depictions are all reliefs and in losing the immediacy of the relationship between a sculpted three-dimensional figure actually lying above the sarcophagus, other symbols are gradually added.

Sobór Trydencki wydał deklarację dotyczącą wizerunków, w której uznał wszelką nieskromność za niedopuszczalną w kościołach. Ponadto, winą za rozkwit nieortodoksyjnych przedstawień Kościół Katolicki obarczał idee renesansowe z humanizmem na czele. Nastrój surowości, jaki zapanował, sprzyjał powstawaniu licznych traktatów na temat decorum w sztuce, które zaczęły przybierać moralizatorski ton. W rezultacie decorum stało się tożsame z przyzwoitością i obejmowało nawet kwestię stosownego rozmieszczenia dzieł sztuki w kościele. Zaskakujące jest, że dziecięce nagrobki były w ogóle umieszczane w prezbiteriach, które są przecież najważniejszą częścią kościoła – w pobliżu ołtarza, gdzie celebrowana jest Msza. Jak twierdzi Ariès: Prawdą jest, że istniała hierarchia ważności, która rozciągała się od… głównego ołtarza do ogrodzenia cmentarza… to, co się liczyło, to odległość od spirytualnego centrum w obrębie kościelnego kompleksu. Jego badania nad pochówkami we Francji wykazały, że tylko kilkoro dzieci było pochowanych wewnątrz kościoła – większość, włącznie z dziećmi szlacheckimi, była grzebana na cmentarzach razem z biedotą. A zatem stanowi to dowód na wyjątkową pozycję, jaką miały dzieci w XVI-wiecznej Polsce.
Dwa najwcześniejsze przykłady przedstawienia zmarłego dziecka jako leżącego putta pochodzą z rzeźbionych nagrobków Jana Aleksandra Tarnowskiego z Tarnowa i Ludwika Szydłowieckiego z Opatowa. Podobieństwo między tymi dwoma wizerunkami już dawno zostało stwierdzone, jak i to, że jeden musiał być wzorowany na drugim. Tutaj pojawia się jednak problem, bo chociaż data nagrobka Ludwika jest znana (zmarł w 1525 r., i taka też data widnieje na nagrobku), w przypadku nagrobka Jana Aleksandra wiele dyskutowano nad jego datowaniem, mimo że jest na nim podany rok śmierci – 1515. Wiele czynników uniemożliwiało owocne zamknięcie tej dyskusji, między innymi pragnienie różnych naukowych autorytetów, by dopasować datę powstania tego nagrobka do proponowanej przez nich atrybucji. W szczególności przekonanie o autorstwie Padovana pozwalało utrzymywać, że powstał on w latach 1530-1535. A.M. w swojej monografii Padovana nie zalicza jednak tego nagrobka do jego prac i jak twierdzi: … żadne przekonujące atrybucje nie zostały w przeszłości wysunięte i ja dziś nie mam nic nowego do zaproponowania… najrozsądniej byłoby powstrzymać się od ustalania atrybucji tego dzieła. Jeśli zostawić kwestię atrybucji, bardziej logiczne wydaje się wiązanie daty powstania nagrobka z datą śmierci dziecka, jak to jest w innych przypadkach.
Istnieją inne czynniki wprowadzające niejasności, jak np. fakt, że omawiany wizerunek dziecka jest obecnie częścią podwójnego nagrobka dwóch dorosłych Tarnowskich w kaplicy św. Anny, który znalazł się tam w 1561 r. i jest określany jako grobowiec trzech Janów Tarnowskich. Niektórym badaczom wystarczyło to, by traktować go jak jednolitą całość. Kolejnym elementem zagadki jest inskrypcja, w której ojciec określony został jako kasztelan krakowski – tytułem nadanym Janowi Amorowi II (Wielkiemu) w 1536 roku. Zatem nagrobek musiałby powstać po tej dacie.
Kiedy Padovano zaczynał pracę nad nagrobkiem Jana Amora II w 1561 r., znajdujące się w prezbiterium katedry wcześniejsze nagrobki zostały stamtąd zabrane, by zrobić dla niego miejsce. Był wśród nich nagrobek Jana Amora Młodszego i jego syna Jana Amora I, obecnie uznawany za pierwszy w Polsce podwójny nagrobek piętrowy. Padovano zestawił ten nagrobek w wersji jaką ma on do dzisiaj, tak aby wpasować go w wolne miejsce na ścianie kaplicy. Wtedy też dodał nowe tablice inskrypcyjne i rzeźbiony wizerunek dziecka. F.R. sugeruje, że nagrobek ten miał formę podwieszonego na ścianie, a płyta, na której leży dziecko, była górną częścią sarkofagu; w dolnej partii znajdował się podest z pierwotną inskrypcją. Podczas przenoszenia ta część została zniszczona i dlatego dorobiono nową inskrypcję.
Nie wiemy – i może nigdy się nie dowiemy – kim był rzeźbiarz, choć pewne jest, że pochodził z Włoch bądź tam był kształcony, i miał już za sobą jakieś osiągnięcia. Porównując różne przedstawienia leżącego putta, by prześledzić rozwój tego motywu, nie napotykamy na wizerunki dzieci z otwartymi oczami; ten jest jedyny. Putto z nagrobka Jana Aleksandra Tarnowskiego jest uśmiechnięte, tak jakby uchwycone w momencie przebudzenia z beztroskiej drzemki. Pozostałe wersje pokazują dziecko w czasie snu.
Modelunek ciała, poziom wykonania, wiarygodne oddanie anatomii i naturalna poza – wszystko to wskazuje na styl renesansowy w jego florenckim wydaniu. D.S. zauważył uderzające podobieństwo do wizerunku dziecka z płaskorzeźby wykonanej przez Antonio Lombardo w Capella del Santo, S. Antonio w Padwie. K.W. z kolei odnotowała bliską analogię pomiędzy przedstawieniem Ludwika Szydłowieckiego a terakotowym putto dormiente ze Staatliches Museum w Berlinie, które wiązane było przez Venturiego z Leonardem da Vinci. Wszystko to potwierdza, że obie rzeźby są wyraźnie renesansowe i italianizujące. Pomimo podobieństw stylowych i formalnych, zdecydowanie nie wykonał ich ten sam rzeźbiarz. Ciało małego Ludwika wyraża większe znużenie, co znamionuje głęboki sen, rysy są ostrzejsze a oczy zamknięte. Zarówno jeden, jak i drugi ma prawą nogę zgiętą w kolanie, ale lewa jest u Jana Aleksandra wyprostowana, u Ludwika zaś zgięta w sposób zapowiadający pozę Zygmunta I z jego nagrobka w katedrze wawelskiej. Jan Aleksander ukazany jest w momencie przebudzenia za śmiertelnego snu, w chwili swojego zmartwychwstania, stąd jego uśmiechnięty wyraz twarzy. Ludwik pozostaje w stanie głębokiego snu, z nadzieją na zmartwychwstanie, która dopiero się ziści.
Treść, jaką przekazują oba nagrobki, jest bardzo prosta – sen (lub przebudzenie z niego) jest zestawiony ze śmiercią poprzez umieszczenie rzeźby na sarkofagu. Nie ma innych symboli śmierci, ponieważ nie są one tu niezbędne. Siła tego przekazu leży w doskonałym wykonaniu obu rzeźb i ich kompozycji. Wszystkie kolejne przedstawienia są już reliefami, i – wobec utraty tej bezpośredniości wyrazu wynikającej z ułożenia rzeźbionej trójwymiarowej figury na sarkofagu – stopniowo dodawane są inne symbole.

Source text - Polish Królewskie Zbrojownie w Leeds jako nowoczesne muzeum historyczne
Muzeum Królewskie Zbrojownie w Leeds zostało otwarte w marcu 1996 roku. Decyzja o podziale cennej kolekcji historycznej broni, która przez stulecia znajdowała się w londyńskiej Tower, wywołała kontrowersje i głośną publiczną debatę. Guy Wilson, zwany Mistrzem Zbrojowni, człowiek odpowiedzialny za stworzenie wizji nowego muzeum nie miał na początku zbyt wielu zwolenników. Jego pomysł był wielce krytykowany m.in. przez kuratorów i badaczy uzbrojenia, którzy sprzeciwiali się rozpraszaniu jednolitej kolekcji.
Pierwsze lata były dość trudne dla muzeum. Finansowane było zarówno z sektora publicznego, jak i prywatnego, przechodząc pod koniec lat 90. poważny kryzys finansowy. Wprowadzenie w 2001 r. wolnego wstępu do państwowych muzeów i galerii w Anglii pomogło podnieść frekwencję i wpłynęło na wzrost popularności muzeum.
Królewskie Zbrojownie w Leeds są dzisiaj publicznie sławioną atrakcją turystyczną. Reprezentują sobą nowoczesne muzeum, które dba o to, by zwiedzający byli zainteresowani tym, co oglądają, co w muzeach o tak ogromnych i specjalistycznych kolekcjach, nużących zazwyczaj swoją monotonnością, jest trudne do osiągnięcia. Dzięki swojemu entuzjazmowi i innowacyjnym pomysłom, jak również ścisłej współpracy całego sztabu profesjonalistów, G. Wilson zdołał stworzyć godne miejsce dla królewskich eksponatów.
O zaprojektowanie budynku dla muzeum został poproszony architekt Derek Walker. Mając na względzie wymogi kolekcji, stworzył surowy gmach ze szkła i granitu, przypominający z zewnątrz fortecę. Wnętrze jest zupełnym przeciwieństwem – kolorowe i zapraszające. Główny hol zwany Ulicą ciągnie się przez całą długość i wysokość budynku, co czyni wewnętrzny plan dla każdego czytelnym a galerie łatwo dostępnymi. Jest ich pięć: Wojna, Turniej, Polowanie, Samoobrona i Galeria Orientalna, do zwiedzania w dowolnej kolejności.
Sztuka demonstracji jest najbardziej charakterystyczną cechą muzeum. Pomysł polegał na tym, by pokazać zbiory w relacji z rzeczywistością dzięki ożywieniu historycznych opowieści. Tematów, które wykorzystywane są do pokazów, jest całe mnóstwo. Biorą w nich udział profesjonalni aktorzy i kaskaderzy, którzy są dobrze przygotowani do swojej roli, aby być w stanie odpowiadać na pytania zwiedzających. Demonstracje pod gołym niebem odbywają się z udziałem koni, psów i ptaków drapieżnych. Zwierzęta jako takie można oglądać na Dziedzińcu Menażerii. Natomiast zbroje używane przez aktorów są wykonywane i naprawiane w obrębie Dziedzińca Rzemiosła, gdzie można się dużo dowiedzieć na temat sposobów wykonywania historycznej broni.
Translation - English The Royal Armouries in Leeds as a modern historical museum
The Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds has been opened since March 1996. The decision of dividing the precious historical weapon collection, residing for ages in Tower of London, was a very controversial one and initiated a great public debate. Guy Wilson, so-called Master of the Armouries responsible for creating a vision of a new museum did not have many supporters from the start. The idea had been widely criticized, among others by curators and weapon researchers who were against breaking up an integral collection.
The first years were not easy for the museum. Financed by both public and private sectors it underwent serious financial crisis in late 90s. Free admission to English state museums and galleries introduced in 2001 encouraged the increase in number of visitors and helped the museum to gain popularity.
Today the Royal Armouries in Leeds are publicly praised tourist attraction. They represent a modern type of museum where visitors are made interested in the subject, which is difficult to achieve in museums with such large and specialized collections, regarded usually as boringly monotonous. G. Wilson thanks to his enthusiasm and innovative ideas as well as the close cooperation within the whole team of professionals, managed to create a worthy setting for the royal exhibits.
The architect Derek Walker had been invited to design a museum building. Respecting the needs of the collection he created a solemn edifice of granite and glass, resembling a fortress from outside. The interior, on the contrary, is colourful and inviting. The main hall called ‘Street’ is as high and long as the whole building which makes the inner lay-out clear to everyone and all the galleries easily accessible. There are five of them: War, Tournament, Hunting, Self-defence and Oriental Gallery, possible to be visited in any sequence.
The most significant feature of the museum is the art of demonstration. The idea was to show the collection in relation to the real world by making the historical stories alive. There is an abundance of topics used for displays. The professional actors and stuntmen taking part in them are well prepared for their role and capable of answering visitors’ questions. The open air demonstrations are with the use of horses, dogs and birds of prey. The animals themselves are displayed in the Menagerie Court. The armour which actors use is made and repaired in the Craft Court area where one is able to learn about the process of making the historical weapons.
