Guinea-Bissau: Bissau’s Bishop Urges the Military ‘To Rediscover its Role’ in Society

According to Bissau’s Bishop Don Jose Camnate the military needs to “rediscover its role” in society so that it can contribute to building a better Guinea-Bissau for all.

In the interview, Don Jose Camnate also stated that “the current government needs to make an effort to correct mistakes and ensure good governance, as the only way to gain credibility”.

He warned that “the people is waiting for tangible actions because they cannot continue to live on promises”, pointing out that “poverty is one of Guinea-Bissau’s biggest problems, and it is becoming endemic and spreading”.

For that reason, the bishop of Bissau said he was concerned with the recent political and military upheaval in the country, urging the need to “make sacrifices so that those in need can have the minimum needed to live with dignity”.

“We are following recent events with great concern, as they arrived unexpectedly. We expected some difficulties during the electoral campaign, and possibly after the elections, but not now,” he stated.
