About me
Education, qualifications and membership of professional bodies

I was brought up in Germany. After completing secondary school, I moved to the UK. I studied for a law degree at an English university and graduated in 1996 with an upper second class LLB (Hons) Law. In 2000, I obtained the Institute of Linguists' Diploma in Translation (German into English). I joined the Institute as an Associate Member in 2001 and have now upgraded to full member status (MCIL).

Mother tongue: German
Language of habitual use: English
Language combinations: English - German; German - English

I predominantly translate into German, my mother tongue. I am able to take on some assignments from German into English, but only in limited specialist areas relating to my work experience in the UK.

Law (asylum & immigration, social welfare law, European law, family law, criminal & civil litigation)
Social policy (social care, equality, social inclusion, criminal justice, welfare state)

I accept payment in GBP and prefer to translate for UK based clients. For enquiries about availability and rates, please contact me through the email icon at the top of my profile page.

I am a member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists and my self-certificates of accuracy are widely recognised in the UK.

Professional Conduct

I adhere to the CIOL Code of professional conduct. This means for example that I only undertake work within my competence and take all reasonable precautions regarding data security and confidentiality.

I occasionally work with computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, but I don't use MT plug-ins and don't share or upload my TMs.

Translation Experience and Relevant Work Experience

I have been working as a part-time freelance translator since 2001, mainly translating legal documents (court and administrative decisions, transcripts of asylum interviews, official correspondence, EAWs, letters of request), company policies and guidelines, terms and conditions and contractual documents.

I have over 15 years' experience as appeals representative and advice worker in the voluntary sector (Citizens Advice Bureau, Law Centre, independent advice agencies). I currently work one and half days a week for a CAB, providing advice for people living with HIV.
