Source text - Portuguese A investigação sobre jornalismo em tempo de guerra tem demonstrado que, em muitos casos, após o início do conflito, os media tendem a aproximar as suas representações da guerra da posição oficial do país onde estão sediados, sobretudo se há participação militar desse país na guerra. As televisões, em especial, têm sido apontadas como objectos da instrumentalização governamental, acusadas de enviesamentos e de excessiva “obediência” aos poderes políticos.
O estudo aqui apresentado centra-se sobre a guerra no Iraque iniciada em Março de 2003 e a sua cobertura em três canais de televisão europeus com expansão global: BBC World, TV5 e RTPi. Procede-se a uma comparação crítica da cobertura noticiosa tendo em conta indicadores como o grau de destaque dado a diferentes aspectos do conflito, os actores sociais predominantes na cobertura televisiva da guerra, os jornalistas de cada estação envolvidos na cobertura da guerra, os comentadores seleccionados e a iconografia. Procura-se ainda avaliar se há alterações ao longo do período analisado no discurso jornalístico e identificar a(s) “meta-narrativa(s)” de cada estação.
O objectivo será responder, principalmente, às seguintes questões: Até que ponto é que houve “alinhamento” para com a posição do governo do país em que cada televisão está sediada? Terão as televisões funcionado como peças na “engenharia do consentimento” controlada pelos governos ou, pelo contrário, promoveram a crítica e dissenção?
Translation - English In many cases, the investigation of journalism in times of war has shown that, after the conflict has begun, the media tend to represent the war according to the official position of their countries. This especially happens in countries that have a military involvement in the war. Above all, television has been pointed out as an object of government manipulation and accused of bias and excessive “submission” to political powers.
The following study focuses on the Iraq War that started on March 2003 and its coverage by three major European television networks: BBC World, TV5 (France) and RTPi (Portugal). A critical comparison of the informative coverage is presented, and aspects such as the degree of importance given to the different sides of the conflict, the prominent social players in the war coverage, the commentators chosen and the iconography will be taken into account. The study also aims to evaluate any changes in the journalistic discourses during a certain time period and to identify the “metanarrative(s)” of each network.
The main objective of this paper is to answer the following questions: To what extent was there an agreement on the positions adopted by the governments of the countries in which the networks are based? Was television used as an instrument in an “engineering of consent” controlled by the government, or did it, on the contrary, promote criticism and disagreement?
