I am just starting out as translator, and have no formal qualifications yet whatsoever.
However, I speak accent-free English, German and French and can understand and read Dutch and Flemish (currently working on becoming fluent). So it was common sense to decide to look for qualifications to match.
I have a basic knowledge of Swedish, Norwegian and Italian - that is, I can hold a conversation in a bar, and point out other people's spelling mistakes, but would not seriously attempt to translate anything. I can just about decipher Icelandic if my life depends on it, but have currently no plans to improve on that.
I've done a few subtitling jobs in the UK and Germany for DVD releases (both subtitle-to-subtitle and speech-to-subtitle), as well as a number of software manuals and the usual amount of general letters.
Last project was subtitling a film from french/flemish to english/german for screening at international Film Festivals.
So now I'm just testing the waters to see whether I might consider this as a line of work in future.
