Do ever look at the 'small print'?

Or its web twin - the disclaimers put in some out of sight part of the website, in small very low contrast fonts, that when it comes to AI all say in essence the same: 'might contain mistakes - check everything for yourself'.

**So, the 'inbuilt feature' being that AI could NEVER be held accountable how could you then EVER 'hold AI accountable'?**

Also, if it came to anyone feeling the need to remind of such basics that 'translators [still] need to take responsibility for the quality of their translations' something is gone seriously wrong.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see if they get back to me or not. How unsettling that there are agencies out there who would use people like that. I really hoped I'd finally found a genuine agency.

If they don't reply by Monday, I guess that makes this the 13th agency scammer that has reached out to me this year. They all reached out through Proz.

It's bad that they were not able to answer my questions and that is certainly a red flag. Except when it comes to agencies, poor communication is far from unheard of. Many of them seem to know next to nothing about linguistics and simply started their agencies because they saw a market for it.

However, I agree that the radio silence is unsettling. I have worked with so many agencies over the years, but since the pandemic, every single agency that has reached out through Proz has tried to scam me. I am starting to wonder if there are any legit agencies left.

There are no ways to be 100% sure, but given the few clues you've given (no NDA, please wait for Godot ...) this is a perfectly possible scenario:

Part one was transcribing a few minutes of a very old tv segment. That's not something they can use.

Oh yes, they could very well have some very good use for it - if' it is to be part of some historical retrospective.

Part two was to listen to a few minutes of another segment and see if I heard anything that wasn't in the script.

Well you just checked for free someone else's work - that ALSO might have been a 'free test'.

It seems odd that one of the largest agencies would resort to such cheap tricks.

Even less sure about that one. I have better things to do than having a close encounter with Messrs. Carter-Ruck & Co so no names to be given, but there are few examples [not so difficult to find] of 'large / reputable / ...' companies behaving just like that – resorting to some very cheap (and very profitable – to them) tricks.

Yes, all that does not sound very nice - definitely agree on that.

A two hours unpaid test is apparently their way of getting a transcription project for free. The fact that they don't answer your questions speaks for itself. If I were you, I'd stay away from it as far as I could because there doesn't seem to be anything legit about it..

No all AI for sure, only the 'free AI' that is on purpose set for 'maximal engagement' (or in plain-speak to keep you hooked) and as part of these settings will NEVER ask you for 'more context' (very bad - that would risk putting users off) nor will EVER say 'I don't know' (very bad for giving the impression of 'universal knowledge') but will happily confirm to you that taking a shortcut over thin ice is a genius idea or go along with and amplify any paranoia of yours etc. And will just 'blag it' by filling gaps with confabulations.

There sure must be something left of AI not 'discredited' ... if 'discredited' is the right term to use in the first place.

When this 'thing' ALWAYS adds a disclaimer in some out of sight corner of the webpage in small low contrast fonts 'might contain mistakes - check everything for yourself' you can not really 'discredit it' - as it never claimed there will be no mistakes in its output!!!

It's more a case of not being trustworthy - to be used with extreme caution. Personally I don't have any use for a 'helper' that needs to be constantly rechecked - in my rulebook it's a false economy of time.

It’s a week or two ago now and I think I had originally included identifying details about the agency but the post was amended by proz.com. I gave up translation as a career seven years ago, and I still miss it sometimes. But I don’t miss strange agencies and vague descriptions:)

Deluxe Spain reached out to me about a transcription job and joining their transcription pool. After a lot of back and forth, they wanted me to do a 2 hour unpaid test. It felt a bit much, but I did it anyway. That was on a Friday. They assured me I wouldn't need to practice or do research, but also weren't able to answer any questions I had about the test instructions. Nevertheless, I figured it out and submitted it. But no one confirmed they received my test. Two days later, on a weekend, another person stepped in and let me know they received it and I'd have the results in a few days.

Then I heard nothing. I emailed twice and only got a reply this week. I asked if I'd have a definite result before the month is through, and they haven't replied.

Unlike most agencies, they had no NDA they wanted me to sign. Tomorrow it'll have been two weeks since the test.

They said they're only able to pay in USD and seem to favour PayPal and Payoneer over bank transfer. They mentioned nothing about what program they use or much details about the job. But they said one would go through training if accepted. I don't know if that would be paid or not.

Has anyone else been approached by them and do you think they're legit?

I was actually scammed by them back in July. They used the fact I am a young translator to take 3000 thousand of my country's currency from me. Despite me reporting them numerous times (I went to local police station twice and reported them online where I could - even my bank took action and, fortunately, no further money was stolen and, now unfortunately, my local police said nothing can be done), they kept trying to contact me (most recent message was today). I wish I found this thread sooner, but now, I know better than to trust such messages, at least.

Jeszcze dwie krótkie uwagi:

Pierwsza:
There's no skid marks on the road.

Ta kwestia ma znaczenie: Brak śladów poślizgu na drodze.. To jest obserwacja - detektyw mówi, co widzi.

Jeżeli osoba tłumacząca rzeczywiście zamierzała (co podejrzewam) napisać: Nie wpadł w poślizg, to takie zdanie byłoby wnioskiem z obserwacji. W taki sposób osoba tłumacząca włożyłaby w usta detektywa zdanie, którego on nie wypowiedział, wyprzedziłaby akcję filmu. To byłaby zmiana fragmentu dialogów. W jakim celu, po co? Moim zdaniem: niepotrzebnie i bez sensu. Wystarczy przetłumaczyć to, co napisał autor dialogów i zachować sens wypowiedzi.

Druga:
Detektyw wchodzi do warsztatu szkutniczego. Przygląda się łodziom i wygłasza uwagę, która chyba (w zamierzeniu?) jest komplementem, ponieważ szkutnik robi gest, jakby nie był zachwycony. O ile mnie uszy nie mylą, detektyw mówi: nes jols. Lektor czyta: nes jols. Polski napis: Ness yoals.

Na stronie [url removed] czytamy: The yoal (Shaetlan pronunciation: [joɐɫ] ⓘ YOHL), often referred to as the ness yoal, is a clinker-built craft used traditionally in Shetland, Scotland.

Wyciągam wniosek, że w polskich napisach pozostała oryginalna nazwa, ponieważ nie istnieje polskie określenie dla tych łodzi. Dla mnie jest to OK.

Na zalinkowanej wcześniej stronie z dialogami zapis brzmi: Nice yoals. Czy angielski skryba pomylił się? Możliwe.

Przy okazji: [url removed] . O ile pamiętam film, detektyw przyszedł właśnie do tego warsztatu.

Koniec zabawy w Szerloka Holmsa przy okazji tego odcinka serialu. ;-)

W każdym razie nie wykluczam, że w którymś miejscu pomyliłem się. Jeżeli tak, to proszę o komentarz.
