I am not a kleptomaniac... I am a papyrofilomaniac!
Wendy Leech wrote:
I did try to find an official term for "one who loves stationery", but the closest I could find was "papyrophile" - a paper lover, but that is certainly a case of a multitude of meaning (and office products) being lost in translation.
Thank you, Wendy. I no longer feel guilty attending numerous fairs, conferences, etc. where I cannot stop myself from picking up dozens of pens, note pads, sticky notes, cute unusable highlite markers, etc. from the displays. Coffee mugs too, since they became office products as well.

I believed a Wikipedia article was about me:
"People with this disorder are compelled to steal things, generally things of little or no value, such as pens, paper clips, tape, and small toys."

Thanks again, Wendy. Now I feel like I am normal (more or less). The only remaining problem is what to do with all those toys? How to organize all the organizers we compulsively "steal" at Chamber of Commerce shows, translation and L10n shows, and impulsively buy in Office Depots? Especially when you realize that all your 35 years of translator's life takes only a small part on your MBA (with a backup on a 32GB flash drive in a safe deposit box), and basically, YOU NO LONGER NEED all that beautiful stationary...
(School supplies, as we say on my side of the pond). I love those small cahiers (I think the size of an A4 sheet of paper folded in half), and the feuilles copies doubles, and those nifty plastic pochettes (folders). A pochette doesn't have pockets like an American folder, but is closed with a series of flaps so that you can keep the papers inside flat. They have them here in the States now, but back in the 80s, I had never seen one before I went to France. I love the way the paper is ruled, not just horizontal lines, but the blue squares with very narrow horizontal lines across. Great for doodling, and for makeshift baseball scorecards! Cool fountain pens, yes! And cartables, especially the leather ones with a strap to sling over your shoulder. I also like the Quo Vadis agendas...fortunately, you can get them here.

Wish I had an Asterix cahier! I did have a Lucky Luke pochette, with Luke singing "I'm a poor lonesome cowboy and a long way from home." It was perfect for me when I studied in France.

Kathryn

The feel of the nib moving across a well-prepared paper surface which takes the ink as it should is a subtle, sensual delight. One which I experience too seldom now banging away at a keyboard with arthritic fingers. However, if the library ever gets finished and the books move from the floor to the shelves, I have great hopes for setting up a desk in a quiet corner there to enjoy the pleasures of paper again.

I don't use it a lot nowadays, and alas, my once-beautiful handwriting has been undermined by years of keyboard use - but I've never lost my love for it. These days my hobby is designing and making greeting cards, and I also occasionally make stationery. I usually start with parchment (the kind that can be used with printers), add deckle edges and use decorative punches or a bit of embossing for a unique touch. When making cards, I do the basic card design using my pc and printer, so I haven't yet given in and invested in stamping equipment, but of course that could be used on stationery as well... the possible variations are practically limitless. In addition to making my own supplies of stationery, I've also boxed it (along with purchased envelopes) and given it as gifts...and it is always well-received, so I know that I am not the only stationerophile...

Letter sets, envelopes, post-its, sticky tabs, moleskin notebooks. Whenever I'm back in the US, I spend literally *hours* at Office Max and the like. I have a major weakness for handmade envelopes and paper - here they're often sold as "Tibet" products - and I'm always looking for origami paper.

Forum: Off topic
Topic: A love of stationery
Poster: Daina Jauntirans
Post title: Yes, me too!!!

Wendy, we're exactly the same!

I'm particularly addicted to notebooks and blank books. And it's especially good to be in Europe where I can get cool fountain pens to my heart's content... Organizers/calendars are another obsession (maybe goes along with the search for the perfect purse) - my calendar search each year takes ages. I'm very particular about personal organizers/calendars, and the cover, features, calendar style, layout, everything has to be just right.

Fortunately, I now get to shop for my kids' school supplies!

When you were younger, did you also like stickers? :-) I still love printing out my own creative address labels.
It has its own style...
So, I am also a stationery-oholic :) and will remain so forever...

Forum: Off topic
Topic: A love of stationery
Poster: Wendy Cummings

I am so totally bored with contract translation that I feel a need to write pointlessly about something totally off-topic...

My love of stationery!

Ever since I was a child, when before every new school term I would buy brand new pencils, pens, rulers etc and place them lovingly in a new pencil case and display them proudly on my desk on the first day of term, I have loved stationery.

Just this weekend, when browsing the station shops waiting for a train, I popped into a card shop and felt an uncontrollable desire to buy their beautifully covered notebooks, pencil holders, desk tidies, stationery sets, patterned notepaper, pens, markers...

But it doesn't even have to be designer, colourful stuff. The simple purchase of a brand-new pristeen eraser will satisfy me, and I have to remind myself that I do not need more paperclips, staplers, post-it notes, highlighters (even those really cute little mini ones) or ring-binders.

And wild horses can't restrain me when i walk through the Ikea storage-box section - so many colours, sizes, stackable, collapsible, coordinating, calling out my name...

"My name is Wendy and I am a stationery-oholic "
