As far as food is concerned, we can simply order off the menu or ask the pub to lay on a buffet for us. Unless anyone objects, I think we should go for the first option to be more flexible - it still doesn't mean we have to order food, but we can if we want.

Also, I booked the table under the name "ProZ powwow", so in case you're lost, just ask at the bar.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Nadine

Forum: Powwows
Topic: Powwow: Reading - United Kingdom
Poster: Russell Jones
Post title: Finalising arrangements

Although this Powwow page doesn’t show clickable links, if I list them here, everyone should receive them by e-mail.

Venue - Oakford Social Club, 53 Blagrave Street, RG1 1PZ:
[url removed]
Streetmap: [url removed]
Multimap: [url removed]

Nadine has kindly reserved a table, provisionally for 10 people, from 12:30 onwards.
At present 14 people have said they may attend but so far only 6 of these are confirmed as definite. While precise numbers are probably not essential, if it is possible for everyone to confirm attendance or otherwise by Thursday morning (here on the Powwow page, by ProZ.com mail or by replying to my separate e-mail), this would be very helpful. If that isn’t possible, it would still be useful to know whether you are a “hopeful” or “doubtful”.

If your ProZ.com identity has not already been verified, both Laureana and I are authorised to verify it. The details of the programme are here:
[url removed] #761. If you would like to take advantage of this, please bring a photo ID (passport or new style driving licence) and refer to the detailed requirements in paragraph 9.5:
[url removed] #2419.

I imagine that most people will just want an informal gathering on this occasion but, if anyone is keen to have a short round-table discussion on a particular subject – or even wants to volunteer a (very brief) presentation - please say so and we can ask whether everyone is interested.

I would expect the Powwow to end by about 4:00 pm but that is entirely up to those attending. I understand that food is available but that there is no obligation to order any - please correct me if this is wrong Nadine.

Russell
I've just checked with the Oakford and they're open on Sunday 3rd. Astrid, I guess it's up to you to decide whether your baby boy doesn't mind being around so many people in a pub with music playing in the background. The atmosphere is relaxed though, and not too noisy. I'm sure no-one would mind and it'd be nice to meet you. Have a great Christmas everyone!

Russell, that sounds like a nightmare, hope you've recovered from the ordeal OK. A friend of mine took 9 hours to get back from Reading last night (it's normally a half-hour drive) and has vowed not to leave the house until all the snow has gone. I can't say I blame her. It may be pretty but it's not that convenient!

Perhaps it would be best to see if any of those who have expressed interested would be able to secure a table.
Would any of you Reading girls be able to make a reservation and/or recommend a place in your home town? That might make things easier.
From what I've seen here and in the powwow forum, Reading seems to be a good choice. I'm not very familiar with the region, so I don't know whether, Russel, it would be difficult for you to make it.
I've organized several powwows, and in my experience the sooner we announce a location the more likely more colleagues will be able to make arrangements to attend. I definitely think we should make a decision no later than this week.

Decent pubs (usually serving food) might just get fully booked for lunch on the Sunday of the New Year holiday. I shall try to do some research on that tomorrow.

Forum: Powwows
Topic: Powwow: Reading - United Kingdom
Poster: Russell Jones
Post title: Salisbury

Yes Sabine, that idea appealed to me too. However, for all those who have expressed an interest so far (excluding me), the total travelling time in minutes (by train) would be: Reading 236, Basingstoke 272, Andover 355, Winchester 378, Salisbury 384 and Newbury 532.
From what they have said so far, it seems that Nicole and Mary would not go as far as Salisbury but perhaps they will prove me wrong?

One was Salisbury. I know that Salisbury is easy to reach from Andover and Bournemouth (I can get there by bus), but I don't know how complicated it is for everybody else. So this is just another idea - waiting for your comments!

Forum: Powwows
Topic: Powwow: Reading - United Kingdom
Poster: Laureana Pavon
Post title: Thanks Russel!

Thanks Russel for setting this up. It's too bad about the trains... If traveling on the weekend is too difficult and we decide to have a midweek powwow in Winchester, that would be fine with me. My only limitation is that I will not be able to drive, so I have to be able to get there by train. I look forward to meeting you!
