I use a laptop and an All-in-One.
An All-in-One computer combines the display and the computer or the "tower" into one single unit.
I like space and technology and I avoid having lots of wires and cables.

"Users" believe otherwise.

I love these absolutist aphorisms… Not.

Why should everyone fit in the same mold and subscribe to one and only worldview?

"Despite what users believe"? Ridiculous.

Desktop exclusively. I love my desktop with a gigantic screen that displays up to three documents at a time. I'm a speed typist and invested in a mechanical keyboard. Anything less would slow me down.

While it would be pleasant to work on my laptop on my shaded patio, I go there to take a break from the screen.

As a student, I work entirely on a desktop with only one monitor.

Once I get more financially stable, I plan to buy another computer - perhaps a gamer laptop - strictly for entertainment. By dividing work space from fun space, I expect to get more work done more quickly, and less procrastination.

I have a desktop and two monitors at the office. But since March 16, 2020, I have been working remotely, using a laptop connected by VPN to the desktop (so I can continue to use MemoQ, which is on the desktop). I have a 23" monitor attached so I still have dual screens, mouse, and external keyboard. I recently purchased an ergonomic Perixxboard-512 which I can use with the laptop and also my personal Mac mini.

I mostly use the remote desktop, except for things that require microphone and camera, because the laptop is a bit slow. They have issued me a new laptop, but I haven´t had time to set it up yet. I should be able to have MemoQ on it, but they have to install it because of admin rights. Once everything is set up on the new laptop, I probably won't have to use the desktop remotely.

Computers lack the warmth of human approach, that's why working with pen and paper only is a great option. When translation is done, you just attach a message to a pigeon's toe and send it (the message, not the toe) to the client.

I have a desktop for now, and plan to purchase at least one laptop in the future, as well.

"Home" and "office" can be moveable concepts.

When stripping down possessions to just one or two bags, you give up some sedentary luxuries.

"Sadly", the desktop and dual screen set up had to go :-)

Post title: 1 Desktop, 3 Laptops

I use my desktop, 2009-vintage, primarily for streaming podcasts and for reading emails first thing in the morning. Since I prefer to go outside of my home to do translation work, to avoid all the distractions and temptations, I have three laptops. One is 2011 vintage, which is still chugging along quite nicely, but which I mainly use in the bedroom. Another that I bought in 2015 is my favorite, because it has the best visual and sound quality; I first used it when I was on Ashland University's campus for three weeks every summer, while I was earning my graduate degree. Then there is the one that I purchased late last year, which I don't care for all that much because of its hyper-sensitivity to touch, something that often derails my navigation on webpages or to other websites. The only thing I like about it is its sleek appearance and its light weight.

This was my throught process while reading your post:

I used to favour a quad desktop setup - OK, I think he meant quad-core.
with five 36” monitors - Neat! I must see pics before I die!
source, target, 652 open browser pages, stock price feed [...] - I was played... :(

I work with my laptop.

I only try to use two (my new and my 7-year old one) when I sometimes attend webinars or specialization courses, because I prefer having both at my disposal - the new one for the meeting, following the course, looking at the material on the screen etc., the old one for opening the provided learning material during lessons or taking quick notes :)

When working from home, I prefer a desktop. I have a main desktop PC as well as a backup desktop in my spare room prepped and ready to go, which visitors can use as well, and an older desktop PC which I currently use as a bedroom TV/entertainment centre, although it could still be used for translating at a pinch, although it is slower than the more recent ones.

I also have a laptop which I mainly use when travelling or working away from my usual workstation.
NB: I don't do anything to do with work on my phone. I don't see how anyone could do that comfortably.

I work on a laptop, which usually sits on my desk, and I have an additional large monitor. I put the source text on the monitor and the target text on the laptop. I only take the laptop off the desk if I want to read on the couch.

When I was travelling a lot, I used to work on a MacBook Pro (translating on trains). When I wasn't travelling it was also my main computer, but running with the lid closed, powered from the mains, and with a big display plugged into it. This arrangement worked well. I'm not travelling much any more, but I still have the MBP. My main computer now is a souped-up MacMini on the desktop, running a big non-reflective display. It is an ideal set-up for me. The MacMini is so small that I just keep it out of the way behind the display.

I have a laptop, but in practice it's exclusively used as a desktop - not moving a single inch and connected to a docking station with keyboard, large screen, etc. Hopefully, the Covid situation will improve soon so I'll be able to attend IRL meetings with colleagues and potential clients, courses and other occasions where my laptop will be useful to take along (the reason I bought it instead of a desktop).
