This was a reference to certain regulations and could cause a specialist to apply wrong guidelines and lead to failure and/or spend more time and effort to correct mistakes
If you ever read about shaped parts of pipelines, you can confidently infer that you're reading a translation (most probably from Russian), and that the things in question are pipeline fittings. I've seen these shaped parts so many times that I had to write about it in our work chat. The irony is that most MT engines know that фасонные части = fittings. It's just that too many hoomans begin to think about rolled shapes (shaped sections), фасонный прокат, when seeing this expression. They don't like to look things up in a dictionary, so they just write "shaped parts." AI has serious competition (as far as mistranslation is concerned) from certain people who pretend to be translators. The best translation I've seen are odd-shaped pipeline parts
It could be because most translators are not reading the texts they translate. I don't mean consulting some manual of a new device but real reading a specialist text as a professional.

A lot of translations I work on, I actually use in my practice. It is rare that I would read the whole summary of product characteristics (drug information) but I often use it as a reference and consult certain sections. Most commonly indications/contrindications, adverse reactions, storage requirements etc. Only when you have difficulty to comprehend what is being said, you realize how important it is to ensure not only linguistic perfection and no accuracy mistakes but also readability. I am usually under time pressure and I want clear information that requires minimum effort to comprehend. Any readability issues can lead to errors and wrong professional judgement.

It is likely that not many texts in translation industry require such high level of fidelity. But those that do, will require full understanding of every word and sentence. No wonder that machine translation is ill-suited for such type of work.

As an example: “terminally sterilized” in some EU texts has been translated as “fully sterilized”. It is nonsense because the product can be either sterile or not. Here it means sterilized at the end as apposed to aseptic process involving already sterile components. More importantly, the corpus of translations from and into English probably offers much more for quality MT than rarer combinations.

Forum: Poll Discussion
Topic: Poll: MTPE requires twice the effort (reading, analyzing, correcting) while cutting the revenue in half.
Poster: Denis Fesik
Post title: Boring

Why do so many people spend so much time defending a thing that doesn't understand the meaning of what it translates? All it can do is use a dictionary for individual words and collocations and make chains out of them. When I get a new translation test to check, I expect to see those word chains rather than living language and I'm surprised every time I see signs of human intelligence at work. While being extremely rare, these signs shine to me even when they are buried under a pile of bad translation habits. Most translators prefer to do word chains, and that's where modern MT engines beat them (but they still don't know it and want to get paid for their word chain exercises). I always believed my job was to understand the meaning of a sentence (at least at a level sufficient for translation) and then just forget about its structure and invent a way to express the same ideas in the target language that would make it easy for the reader to understand. This has been my principle from the very beginning. And there's a huge gap between word chains and no-compromise translation, so I wasn't paltering when I wrote in another post that my work speed didn't change after I abandoned MT. Someone else's experience may be different depending on the language pair and the kind of texts they usually deal with. MT outputs are profoundly boring. I guess it can be a workable choice for someone who usually translates boring texts and is okay with delivering boring results. When I comment on candidates' test translations, I always give examples of my own translations of the same test—and they are always, always contrastingly different because I don't do word chains. Woe me, if MTPE is a skill, then I lack it

[Редактировалось 2024-10-14 12:22 GMT]

Forum: Poll Discussion
Topic: Poll: MTPE requires twice the effort (reading, analyzing, correcting) while cutting the revenue in half.
Poster: Kaspars Melkis
Post title: my own experience

I don't do MTPE but recently I experimented with it.

My brother installed solar panels and bought an inverter that came with a manual only in English. As he doesn't speak or read any English, he asked me if I could help to translate it as he was unsure about some configuration options.

I told him that the translation of >5000 words would normally cost at least 500 euros. It really isn't worth for me to translate it professionally but I could try to use MTPE to see how much easier it would be to do.

I found the manual online in pdf format, unfortunately generated as a hard image. I used OCR and it produced a decent word file for translation. Then I decided to use MemoQ for machine translation because it has 30 day free trial. Next step was to select MT engine. I chose basic Google API because Google gives you 200 euro credit to try it for free.

I spent around 1 hour to figure out how to import API key into MemoQ and select all the options. And let it run.

The first impression was quite good. It produced a readable text which was basically correct. Only few issues, like 50 was converted into SO. I only had to proofread it. I used my time on plain and train and unfortunately it took me double the time than I had initially expected. I expected to spend 5 hours on proofreading and instead it was closer to 10 hours.

The main reason was inconsistencies. Google MT term usage was wildly inconsistent. As it was only an informal translation I didn't need to care about specific glossary or even occasional typos but it had to be understood to a technically inclined person. My brother sometimes corrects my usage of terms, so I had to research them before confirming.

Another things was that many MT translation sentences seemed to resemble poor translators who too closely follow the source sentence structure and produces translated sentences that can be understood but are not really fair to the reader. Some clients accept that because business needs require the cheapest possible solution that passed regulator threshold but I could not allow this for my brother. My reputation was at stake.

It is worth mentioning that the source text was also not perfect and had many typos. Funny that MT actually corrected many of them but the rest was easy to identify and correct. Clearly the Asian manufacturer who prepared the manual also was under financial pressure and most likely didn't hire the professional technical writers and let engineers to write and cheap support personnel to format it.

Unfortunately in the final output all the tables became garbled. That is a common problem when OCRing complex documents with tables. I suppose if it was a multilingual project, the project manager would have re-formatted the source document and distributing to translators to ensure smooth translation. I personally gave up because I hate formatting and concentrate mostly on translating issues. I gave my brother half formatted word doc and the table with sentence translations and told to use it with the original manual to figure out what each configuration option means.

Verdict: Good MTPE required almost as much time as a direct translation by a specialized translator. The business needs dictate that it will only be done in critical cases and the rest will be done as quickly and cheaply as possible at lower quality.

[Edited at 2024-10-14 10:14 GMT]

If used for repetitive, prosaic, non-creative content, MT is often of great help.
It is not made for creative content, or marketing or any content where you want to connect with the reader.
In the Jobs here on Proz I even saw agencies looking for post editors for machine translated literature...
Some people are actually stretching things, but if no one would accept working that way and for those rates, their path would end quite soon.

Forum: Poll Discussion
Topic: Poll: MTPE requires twice the effort (reading, analyzing, correcting) while cutting the revenue in half.
Poster: Kay Denney
Post title: .
Lingua 5B wrote:

I’d like to make a distinction between “effort” and “mental dumbing/exhaustion”.
Mental dumbing, now that's a very pithy way of putting it.

A friend posted a thing on a social media showing that a robot had asked them to click on all squares showing traffic lights, to prove that they the friend were not a robot. Except that the picture didn't show any traffic lights, just a sign warning motorists that there were traffic lights ahead (so an icon-like picture of traffic lights). This induced the same sense of despair I feel when I'm asked to proof an AI- or MT-generated translation. It's not the real thing, it's an ersatz, it kind of looks real but if you're paying attention it really isn't, and it's gonna be hard work convincing the robot that it isn't, and it's hard work getting the text to sound and feel like a real human-generated text with a sense of warmth or wonder or whatever the text is supposed to convey. I'm not sure whether the headache I get is caused by the sense of despair or whether they are just very strongly correlated and either way dammit I have a headache and aspirin doesn't work on robot-induced headaches.

The bots are winning already, folks.

[Edited at 2024-10-14 08:22 GMT]

If the correct glossary is used during the translation process (possible, but not trivial), MTPE can significantly speed up the work. The assertion in the poll is simply absurd; even with old Google Translate two years ago, the average time savings were about 20%. Today's MT (especially DeepL) produces relatively decent quality.

I’m not thrilled with MTPE tasks, but it’s work, and it’s decently paid.

Also not sure what to add to my CV in the future: “I was correcting machine output”, that won’t impress anyone and won’t tell anything about my skills.

Some people call it a “skill”. It’s as much of a skill as correcting papers of students that are not particularly talented. Most teachers avoid this part of their job (correcting and grading papers) as it’s more exhausting than any other part, but those who accept do it, don’t call it a “skill”.
