Forum: Poll Discussion
Topic: Poll: If you could make AI disappear for everyone, would you?
Poster: Dan Lucas
Post title: I agree with most of what you say but...
Philip Lees wrote:
Anybody who translates without the assistance of MT nowadays is working with one hand tied behind their back.
...it is a fact that some clients will not allow the use of MT. Their approach is that the potential advantages of the technology do not yet outweigh the disadvantages they perceive, either in terms of actual functionality or in terms of the privacy implications for sensitive documents.

If you're dealing with the filing of statutory documents containing material non-public information, how do you convince the regulatory authorities that the use of machine translation does not risk inadvertent disclosure to some unknown person?

When you're dealing with people who do not consider "Nah, Google says it's just fine, don't worry about it" to be a persuasive argument, it is a genuine issue. Of course, such clients and authorities may be wrong, and they may change their approach in the future, but for now, something like the above seems to be their attitude in my part of the market. I work with one hand behind my back, and so do my competitors.

Just to emphasize, I am not anti-AI/MT as such. I think the use of AI tools in translation could speed up my work significantly, although perhaps in areas peripheral to the actual translation of each segment of text. There are some tasks for which I think I can develop my own AI/MT tools that would not in any way violate the conditions placed on me by my clients, and lead to significant increases in efficiency.

I'm aware of course that the whole concept of "efficiency" is anathema to some translators, but I don't care.

Regards,
Dan

But AI isn't going to put an end to the translation profession, any more than calculators and spreadsheets put an end to the accounting profession.
I think you're wrong on this. Machine translation means that anyone wanting a text translated can enter this text into DeepL or whatever other programmes are out there and have the text translated instantaneously for much less than a human translator costs.
It depends on the text. I think AI will take over all "nuts and bolts" translation and this process has already started, as you note above.

At the other end of the scale, I think it will be a long time before AI can produce acceptable translations of literary texts, poetry, songs, or any medium where style is a crucial feature. Likewise anything that involves humour.

As long as there's a demand for that kind of translation, translators who can provide it will still find work.
The only job left for translators in the era of machine translation is post-editing the translations produced by DeepL. But seriously, who wants to do this day in, day out?
And then there's that. As I already use machine translation to help me generate a "fast and dirty" first draft, and I consider the editing stages that follow to be the truly creative part of the job, I don't see it as such a huge development.

Anybody who translates without the assistance of MT nowadays is working with one hand tied behind their back.

Forum: Poll Discussion
Topic: Poll: If you could make AI disappear for everyone, would you?
Poster: Maria Laura Curzi
Post title: Is it really helpful?

AGI has been in development for some 20 years, yet experts say there's plenty of room for improvements.

My concerns are:
#1: How long will this “development stage” last? Nobody seems to know. Plenty of developments, like LLM, are still in testing and ongoing improvements. Then, I wonder: Having an allegedly groundbreaking technology under development for more than 2 decades —more than one generation— is **really** helpful?
I try to consider the advertising versus the potential applications. I think +20 years for any unfinished technology development is indeed a long time considering the speed at which gadgets become obsolete.

#2: How much more will it cost? Nobody seems to know, either. I've read numbers like $300-500 billions. All that money and yet isn't fully developed. Again, I wonder: Is spending tons of money on the +20-year ongoing development of an allegedly groundbreaking technology **really** helpful?
I try to consider this investment versus the investment in developing resources for people to access clean water, which is a major global crisis, just to name one (there are more, sadly).

#3: How should it be used? One more time, nobody knows. Perhaps the more important of the three concerns is the less mentioned by the companies/people involving in the development and investment, and that isn't by chance. We all know the issues about confidentiality, copyrights' infringement, and privacy violations; we know there are several lawsuits and many discussions about regulating AI, but there aren't any laws yet. So, I wonder: Is not having regulations after +20 years on this allegedly groundbreaking technology in ongoing development **really** making it helpful?
I try to consider the advertised improvements in medicine versus the less publicized scams, the accidents of autonomous cars, or the translators' hallucinations.

Overall, I think the AI (or AGI, or full AI) narrative is seriously biased.
It's aggressively sold by powerful multimillionaire tech giants as the manna from heaven, and this started a huge hype. The problem is, there's a backstage these giants aren't telling us about, so I deeply mistrust this worldwide narrative spread all over the Internet by the Internet owners.
My second-last employer dissolved their entire in-house translation department (consisting of around 10 employees) three years ago and started using DeepL instead. They haven't asked any of the translators back yet, which means they must be pretty happy with the results. The only job left for translators in the era of machine translation is post-editing the translations produced by DeepL. But seriously, who wants to do this day in, day out?

That's merely wishful thinking. If history is anything to go by, there's been winners and losers in each and every revolution. Existential Risks

The development of artificial general intelligence (AGI) that surpasses human intelligence raises long-term concerns for humanity. The prospect of AGI could lead to unintended and potentially catastrophic consequences, as these advanced AI systems may not be aligned with human values or priorities.

To mitigate these risks, the AI research community needs to actively engage in safety research, collaborate on ethical guidelines, and promote transparency in AGI development. Ensuring that AGI serves the best interests of humanity and does not pose a threat to our existence is paramount.

To recap:

-- these advanced AI systems may not be aligned with human values or priorities = in plain-speak: once advanced enough, they (the AI systems, not those imagining they still control them) will have **their own** goals and priorities;

-- artificial general intelligence (AGI) that surpasses human intelligence = these hopeless dummies called humans (**as AI will see it**) won't be able to do anything about it;

at that stage, it's only a question of time before this part comes to fruition

-- lead to unintended and potentially catastrophic consequences (**for humans**, that is - not for the AI).

Can't be, no ways?

As long as you believe that cavemen could organise an expedition to another galaxy, then sure this could never happen.

Everyone is free to keep running towards the cliff edge. Take AI supported surgery robots, for example. They are more accurate thanks to AI, not less accurate.

I'm afraid your anecdote isn't proof whatsoever of the lack of usefulness of AI in medicine...

...or translation. Some examples are AI blood pressure measurers, or eyesight machines for prescription glasses. Both tend to give much higher results than realistic ones. Then after the machine hits a very high number, the doctor goes along and calibrates the measuring manually.

Last year I had a cycling injury. I didn't break or sprain anything but had a persistent pain for months, so eventually visited my primary care doctor, and she sent me for X-ray imaging. I got there and a huge robot hand was above me, it took the job of taking the image, there was a radiologist who controlled everything. His opinion: no bone breakages. I went with these results to an orthopedic specialist, he says: as far as I am concerned, this image is healthy and fine. He gave me some lifestyle advice for pain, and some orthopedic gel to apply. None of this helped me, the pain persisted throughout. What did that image show? It showed bones? Where are the ligaments, blood vessels and and a ton of other things that could have been squashed in the incident? Eventually, I had to help myself with some targeted exercises and some orthopedic cream I found (the doc's gel didn't help much).

My point is: instead of flashing a huge robot hand above me, your job is to help me and resolve my pain and issues, which you did not do. So, why do I care about your robot? The robots are there to help doctors churn as much as PPM (patient per minute), not to help the patient.

But AI isn't going to put an end to the translation profession, any more than calculators and spreadsheets put an end to the accounting profession.

In other areas, notably medicine, AI has a great deal to offer, and has already proved its worth in enhancing the abilities of doctors to glean information from medical images of various kinds. It can also help in the planning of customised treatment plans in complex cases.

Rachel mentioned the environmental impact, and it's true that AI has a large carbon footprint (though infinitesimal compared to the Internet, and I don't see people wanting to eliminate that). Furthermore, environmental and climate sciences are the kind of areas where AI is likely to be able to make a big contribution, as making sense out of chaotic systems is something it is good at.

As the author of the Forbes article referred to above points out, there are many features of AI that need to be addressed so that the dangers will not outweigh the benefits. The same is true of any new technology. But eliminating AI altogether - if we could do that, and we can't - would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

The latest poll figures show that 43.9% of responders are willing to dump the baby. I find that very disheartening.

Deleting it is not a good choice, but some features could be deleted !
Or it should simply be restricted...

Euphoria sparks a stock market rally. Eventually things get overheated and share prices become ridiculous. Then it all collapses.
It happened exactly 25 years ago when the roughly five-year dot-com bubble popped, leaving trillions of dollars of investment losses in its wake.

There are certain issues with it, but it’s progressing rapidly. I don’t see any serious problems with AI.
