I am finding more and more documentaries on YouTube where the voiceover is obviously AI-generated- making the documentary unwatchable. They are making a mess of our world

Yes, AI dubbing is the "new gem" (should I say germ?) in the AI-generated BS that is invading the web.
First, the sound. All voices sound like robots, a monotonous, emotionless, and unmodulated voice that seems to be coming from a vocoder.
Second, the spelling and grammar of the language. There are basic grammar mistakes, at least in Spanish.

I heard an AI-generated advertisement for a riding app (not Uber) allegedly located in Argentinian Spanish — with 'vos' verbs conjugation — but talking about "plata" (money) which is a feminine noun used with a masculine article: "el plata".

So, I decided not to use any service advertised with AI-dubbed videos, because if they can't make good quality adverts, I doubt they can have a good quality service.

Regarding AI, not only am I concerned about the energy use (should we say "waste"?) but also about the results within languages, how the AI's regurgitated BS creates more nonsense gibberish that "sounds good" but is empty of meaning. First in English, and then spreading to other languages.
This is affecting other activities as well, like for example films. The expansion of the horrendous AI dubbing or unintelligible AI subtitling makes films impossible to watch for non-native people.

So, it seems AI is consuming/wasting too much energy for delivering very poor results. For such an investment, it isn't efficient at all.

If that will happen (which it won't), it will be because of falling birth rates (especially in the Western world) and not because of climate change.

For me it`s impossible to not be concerned about AI, everything that I see is getting worse and worse, funny videos are not real anymore, someone can just take a picture of us and remove or clothes, they can blackmail people, use our voices to scam our loved ones. Even the good things aren`t as good as marketed. And in top of all that, there`s the pollution, waste of water and energy, and problaby will cause a great crash on world`s economy (if not a war)

There are multiple reasons to be concerned about the development of AI.

“The A.I. pioneer Yoshua Bengio, a computer science professor at the Université de Montréal, is the most-cited researcher alive, in any discipline. When I spoke with him in 2024, Dr. Bengio told me that he had trouble sleeping while thinking of the future. Specifically, he was worried that an A.I. would engineer a lethal pathogen — some sort of super-coronavirus — to eliminate humanity. “I don’t think there’s anything close in terms of the scale of danger,” he said.”

“Dr. Bengio’s pathogen is no longer a hypothetical. In September, scientists at Stanford reported they had used A.I. to design a virus for the first time. Their noble goal was to use the artificial virus to target E. coli infections, but it is easy to imagine this technology being used for other purposes.

I’ve heard many arguments about what A.I. may or may not be able to do, but the data has outpaced the debate, and it shows the following facts clearly: A.I. is highly capable. Its capabilities are accelerating. And the risks those capabilities present are real. Biological life on this planet is, in fact, vulnerable to these systems. On this threat, even OpenAI seems to agree.

In this sense, we have passed the threshold that nuclear fission passed in 1939. The point of disagreement is no longer whether A.I. could wipe us out. It could. Give it a pathogen research lab, the wrong safety guidelines and enough intelligence, and it definitely could. A destructive A.I., like a nuclear bomb, is now a concrete possibility. The question is whether anyone will be reckless enough to build one.”

True, but as Lieven points out, the question is itself political. Any reduction of AI's energy use will be the result of economics and/or political action.

Right! The reasoning is (sort of) clear: in War and Peace, Russia beats back a foreign invader (i.e. don't invade Russia!). The country (as the USSR) won WWII, took a whole lot of territory and then lost pretty well all of it plus fifteen republics, which was more than it had won (i.e. Russia would do well not to invade other countries!). The reasoning is clear and I think we can all agree with it. But Lieven's point remains valid too: "AI is an environmental threat, but it is actually humanity itself that is a threat to itself".

Having said this, AI may itself help us find solutions to the energy crisis it is itself creating. It will certainly help design and build better solar panels and wind turbines, and it may also help achieve commercial nuclear fusion.

Yesterday, I read an article stating that the blackout that left Portugal, Spain and parts of France in the dark for more than 10 hours last April was mainly due to the overload of AI data centres. The irony is that most data centres were designed with generator-based backup systems and therefore continue to function when the rest of the world stops working. For years, I have heard protests from many environmentalists, and others, about the environmental impact of paper production, but curiously, I hear very few voices raised against AI’s environmental footprint.
