Forum: Smart shoppers
Topic: Term extraction software to recommend?
Poster: Simon Sobrero
Post title: still no joy - no extraction

It's late 2007 and I have still not heard any news from SDL's technical department. I have obtained a refund but would be happy to repurchase the software if it ever worked. I managed to extract and view about 1/25 of my total TM and that is it! I have had no answers from anywhere as to why and how I could remedy the situation. There is nothing on Google to suggest anyone has ever had any problems with the software apart from myself.... anyone able to help me out here with language and statistical based Terminology extraction? Very much appreciated.

Term extraction software to recommend? | IntelliComplete does NOT extract terminology! But SDL Phrasefinder does! or does it?

Forum: Smart shoppers
Topic: Term extraction software to recommend?
Poster: Simon Sobrero
Post title: IntelliComplete does NOT extract terminology! But SDL Phrasefinder does! or does it?
Dr. Stephan Pietzko wrote:

You might want to try IntelliComplete ( ). It includes a flexible term and phrase extract function. Price is very reasonable even if you don't want to use its main function.
Stephan, are you sure about this? I have IntelliComplete and it is great but as far as I know it does not do Terminology Extraction as it is intended here!! The Embedded Editing function is useful but that's not the same as Monolingual/Bilingual extraction 'proper'... I have purchased SDL Phrasefinder and I am struggling with it - it does not work for me.... I will post my own discussion point shortly. Cheers.

[Edited at 2007-08-15 15:13]

...In fact this is probably the best place to do it... SDL Phrasefinder works very impressively on tiddly little files - but try it on my modestly sized freelancer's translation memory and it simply cannot cope.

It takes over 24 hours of my PCs time just to allow me to view a fraction of the data.

I contact technical support and they give me no clue as to why. Their response is, show us your TM and we'll see what's causing the problem. Well, I am not prepared to share my TM so I am still waiting to hear what on earth it could be that is causing the upset.... anyone else found the same problem?

[Edited at 2007-08-15 15:27]

[Edited at 2007-08-15 15:38]

Nothing (g)?

PlusTools at WordFast matches the "nothing" price tag, and it does more than nothing, even if not that much as or noticeably less than extract (enough for me btw).

I measure the cost of all this stuff in my work hours. If XY app spares me Z hours in next - say - month or two, I think it's worth buying. The only problem one may have of course is to know up front how useful some tool will eventually turn out to be.

I did some work with a time-limited version of Extract and I could see its worth for cases, where there's huge workload of bilingual material to get sorted out. For me as a little retail rabbit a tad too much (it would spare me Z hours in a quarter or two, if at all).

There's also some software out of Otawa/Nepean, that got rave comments, but I cant remember the name.

Regards

[Edited at 2007-05-09 18:05]
Hi Viktoria,
I don't know what you call a reasonable price, but you could have got SDL Term Extract (or whatever it's called) two weeks ago for 259€, including 3-month proz membership. Compared to the 1000+€ price tag before the SDL/Trados merge 2 years ago, and even to the regular price now (about 500€) it was tempting and I fell for it.

I tested it on 2 personal TMs totalling 24k TUs and it does a good job. When I have spare time, I will make serious use of this tool...

Good day,
Philippe

Forum: Smart shoppers
Topic: Term extraction software to recommend?
Poster: Viktoria Gimbe

I searched the forum for this, but surprisingly found nothing...

I wanted to shop for term extraction software, but I am not open to shell out the big bucks for SDL's product - I don't think it is worth nearly that much. However, I am willing to invest as long as the software can extract the terms from a source text so I can establish the terminology before starting to translate - at a reasonable price. I am basically looking for something that will extract words but also phrases, but that will be better than a concordancer (I don't want a long list of meaningless strings).

I've been looking all over the place, but found nothing so far. I wanted to try ExtPhr32, but after downloading and installing the evaluation version, I never got to use it (the option to extract terms stays greyed out no matter what I do). I contacted them and am still waiting for a reply since last week, so I guess that's a dead end.

Can anybody recommend something?

Thanks!
