Forum: Localization
Topic: Open Source Localization software?
Poster: Martin Wunderlich
Post title: Shamelessly promoting my linklist... :-)

Hi Pamela,

It really depends on what you mean by localisation and what exactly you want the tools to do. Do you need something that provides WYSIWYG GUI editing? Or some filters and converters? Or an editor for a particular format?

You can find a fairly comprehensive list of open-source tools related to translation and localisation here:

Мaybe it's a starting point...

Kind regards,

Martin
Pamela Gulijczuk wrote:

Hello everybody.

I´d like to know if there's some Open Source Localization software.

As far as I know, this type of software -the Open Source versions- are in development, and they are just that.. projects that have not been completed yet.

Please, if you do know about some Localization Open Source Software that is currently running and working, let me know.
I´d be grateful to all of you :-)

Thanks in advance

Pamela
So any questions about Pootle... let them come.

Open Source Localization software? | Localisation is big...

Forum: Localization
Topic: Open Source Localization software?
Poster: Samuel Murray
Post title: Localisation is big...
Pamela Gulijczuk wrote:
I´d like to know if there's some Open Source Localization software.
I'm sure there is, but localisation is about more than just translation, and you have to figure out how much of the non-translation components your current tools and methodologies can handle.

For example, you can use OmegaT for the translation of documents and Java language files, but you can't use it for project management, even though project management certainly is part of a localisation effort.

So I guess what you might want to do is to first think of what it is that you want, and then ask if there are opensource programs that do those things.

Forum: Localization
Topic: Open Source Localization software?
Poster: Vito Smolej
Post title: a tough subject

Here's some URLs which you probably know anyhow.

Re pootle I have no experience with it, but I have about 50.000 words of PO translated on my track record. I wrote PO TRADOS interfaces (because I could not understand, how such a project can be done without the benefit of a translation memory). But, that was some time ago and today I would probably go some other way (very probably in the direction of XLIFF).

OmegaT handles (source/to be translated) PO as well. Of course, this is not too often the case: majority is 95% translated and one needs to do the changes.

Id bet on the XLIFF port - with OASIS involved it shows the importance of the issue:

The whole Oo help is several hundred thousand PO segments in size and it is unavoidably a group effort. Maybe you could bore in from the language pair side.

Regards

[Edited at 2007-09-15 07:13]
