Forum: Translator resources
Topic: Built a browser-based TMX + AI tool for technical manuals – looking for feedback
Poster: Michal Kavalek

Built a browser-based TMX + AI tool for technical manuals – looking for feedback

Hi all,

I work for a Czech machinery manufacturer and we translate our technical manuals into about ten languages. Buying a full CAT licence for everyone who occasionally touches a translation didn't make sense for us, so I built a small set of browser tools instead and have now made them public at aitranslator.cloud.

What they do:
- Document translator: open a DOCX, XLSX or PPTX and translate segment by segment, formatting kept. TMX matches take priority; the remaining segments go to an LLM with your glossary as binding context.
- Aligner: turns an original and its existing translation into a TMX, so old manuals become a usable memory (also in Trados).
- TMX editor and TMX merge. The merge handles the UTF-16 TMX that Trados and memoQ export, which many online tools fail on silently.
- Glossary as a plain Excel/CSV, including forbidden terms per language.

Files are processed in the browser and never uploaded to my server. Segments for MT go straight to the API with your own key.

It's not meant to replace a full CAT tool for daily professional work. It's aimed at repetitive technical text with strict terminology.

Full disclosure: I'm the developer, and it's a paid subscription with a 30-day free trial. I'm mainly interested in feedback from people who work with TMX every day: what breaks, what's missing, and whether the alignment holds up on your files.

Thanks,
Michal

Forum: Translator resources
Topic: Using LLMs Directly in Trados Studio: A Plugin Worth Exploring
Poster: uniconnecting
Post title: The future is open-weight models

I believe open-weight/'open-source' models will play an increasingly important role in the future of AI, including machine translation. Smaller models can be fine-tuned or adapted using domain-specific or proprietary data, allowing them to perform very well on specialized translation tasks while offering greater control over cost, privacy, and deployment.

For many freelance translators, especially those working with relatively low or irregular volumes, usage-based API costs or recurring subscriptions to commercial AI services may be difficult to justify. In such cases, efficient open-weight models, particularly those that can be run locally, could become an increasingly practical alternative. To me, I would never share my client's data with those Cloud providers.

Small Local LLMs are the future.”

Translation is this kind of job a small local LLM does quite well.

The bigger open models that would narrow the gap need far more GPU memory than most of us have at home, and once you run them on Ollama Cloud or Hugging Face instead, your text leaves your PC anyway. It's also worth knowing that the paid APIs from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google don't train on what you send by default. Do check each provider's terms against your client's requirements, but "cloud" doesn't automatically mean "unsafe".
I have carefully read their data policies. But the catch is this: while Anthropic and OpenAI do not "train" their models on your data, they still have access to it, whether intentionally or accidentally.

Anthropic’s recent security report (from September) shows that they can access our data if they wish, primarily under the guise of "monitoring" and "security". Recent cybersecurity incidents at OpenAI demonstrate that they do not have full control over areas where they should, specifically regarding agent behavior and data security.

Is it Ollama Cloud? I use Ollama locally on my gamer PC, which has a decent GPU, but it struggles with newer models like Gemma 4 and Qwen.
Cool, it's good to have some competition! Keeping everything on your own machine is a genuine selling point, too: some end clients simply don't allow their texts to go to a cloud service.

That said, I'd be cautious about relying on a small local model for real work, especially with complex material. TranslateGemma 12B, the model in the demo, is impressive for its size and fine for short, straightforward sentences. But a model small enough to run on a PC is in a different league from the big cloud models (Claude Opus, GPT-5.6, Gemini Pro), and the gap shows exactly where we need help most: long, complicated sentences, following a detailed prompt or style guide, sticking to the glossary, and keeping tags in place. To their credit, the TransLLM FAQ says much the same: smaller local models sometimes paraphrase glossary terms or skip parts of a prompt, and a larger hosted model is the answer when precision matters.

Li-Hsiang, what you're seeing on your gaming PC is the other half of the story.

Supervertaler for Trados supports both, so you can use a local model when a client requires it and a cloud model when you're allowed to. And if you'd rather not take my word for any of this, SuperBench (on the Batch Operations tab) runs the same segments of your own document through three models side by side, a local one included, and has a fourth model judge the results blind.

See:

Here's what Supervertaler for Trados currently supports:

Cloud models (your own API key; you pay the provider directly)
• Anthropic: Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Claude Fable 5.1, Claude Haiku 4.5
• OpenAI: GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Terra, GPT-5.6 Luna, GPT-5.4 Mini
• Google: Gemini 3.1 Pro, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite
• Mistral AI (a French company, for anyone who prefers a European provider): Mistral Large, Mistral Small
• DeepSeek: DeepSeek V4 Pro, DeepSeek V4 Flash
• xAI: Grok 4.3
• OpenRouter: one API key for hundreds of models, from all of the above and many others, including open models such as Gemma 4, Qwen and DeepSeek

Local models (free, and your text never leaves your computer)
• Ollama: TranslateGemma 12B and 4B, Qwen 3 14B, Aya Expanse 8B, or any other model you've downloaded. Ollama can also run on another machine on your network, such as a PC with a bigger GPU.
• Any OpenAI-compatible server, such as LM Studio, through the Custom provider

Most of these are in the drop-down menus, and you can use any other model a provider offers by typing its name into the Model ID field in AI Settings.

Incidentally, I just released Supervertaler for memoQ a few days ago, see:
Supervertaler for memoQ is not quite as feature-rich as Supervertaler for Trados, but I'm getting there...

Michael

---

PS: I made a very short screencast a while ago, showing the model selector in Supervertaler for Trados. Note that the models shown are now outdated, but the basic structure is still the same: ("Choose from dozens of LLMs in Supervertaler for Trados").

Forum: Translator resources
Topic: Using LLMs Directly in Trados Studio: A Plugin Worth Exploring
Poster: Mohamed Zeid

I wanted to share a tool that I think may be of interest to translators who have been experimenting with LLMs in their workflow.

It's called TransLLM, and it's a plugin for Trados Studio that lets you connect Trados directly to LLMs. What I found particularly interesting is that it can work with local models through LM Studio or Ollama, so it is possible to translate without sending the actual translation content to a cloud service.

It can also connect to cloud-based models if preferred, and it includes some features that are particularly relevant to translation work. For example, you can use glossaries to help guide terminology, create custom prompts for different types of content, and work with tagged segments.

The glossary functionality is especially useful when you want the model to follow preferred terminology instead of translating everything freely. Tag preservation is also supported, which is important when working with formatted or tagged content in Trados. In my experience, tag handling is not always perfect, so it is still something I would check carefully, but it is definitely useful to have the functionality built into the workflow.

For me, the interesting part is less about "AI translation" itself and more about being able to experiment with different translation models directly inside the CAT tool instead of copying segments back and forth between Trados and an external interface.

Of course, the translation quality depends heavily on the model being used, and running models locally also requires appropriate hardware and some setup, so it will not necessarily be the right solution for everyone.

I thought I would share it here since there have been quite a few discussions about LLMs, confidentiality, terminology control, and their possible use in professional translation workflows.

I'd be interested to hear whether anyone else here has experimented with local LLMs inside Trados or another CAT tool, especially when it comes to terminology and tag handling.

Forum: Translator resources
Topic: Issue with DeepL
Poster: Mohamed Zeid
Post title: TransLLM

This could be a bit late, but maybe it's worth-sharing. I found this Trados plugin "TransLLM" amazing at forcing glossary terms. It also uses local LLMs, so you have full control on your client's data. It's also really fast if you have a machine with 8gb GPU. Here is a link to it.

To me personally, LLMs and NMT/MT struggle most of the time with terminology management and the same term could be translated in different variations from a string to another. This was always a showstopper for me to rely on automated translations. TransLLM fix most of these issues, but I found out that it mostly depends on the LLM used when it comes to terminology consistency. You need a model that's instruction-based. I use Google TranslateGemma:12b and it's simply amazing.

Responses may be anonymous, and no confidential client or project information is requested.

Choose your preferred language:

🇬🇧 English:

🇮🇹 Italiano:

Thank you very much to anyone willing to contribute. They represent years of study, efforts, work and professional growth.
One day, when I'm no longer here, I hope they will be donated to someone who will truly appreciate and make good use of them, rather than simply becoming part of an inheritance.

As tools for use in the 3rd decade of the 21st century - less so.

That said, I have one or two atlases of the world printed in the early 1970s - I keep them as memorabilia because I remember I used to love looking through them when I was little :)

My Oxford reference dictionary is from the 1990s, so its geographical, political sections are long obsolete, but I kept it for other reasons.

[Edited at 2026-07-21 13:17 GMT]

So, may I have your permission to quote all of you?

Thanks.

Mario Chávez
Peter Motte wrote:

I keep them. All axioms etc. still hold.
Yes, but methods of presenting the knowledge have changed radically over the years (I refer to primary and secondary eduction). I used to teach, my wife still teaches and we both hoarded all kinds of text books, exercise books etc. but at some point the changes in curricula and, what's more important, teaching methods, even the order in which knowledge is presented have changed so that those old books have become all but unusable. Verdict - recycling box. The same goes for old (obviously not referring to truly old ) encyclopedias etc.

All my remaining paper dictionaries are at arm's reach and yet I don't recall when I last used any of them.
I wasn't actually talking about schoolbooks.
And old encyclopedia's often have content which you don't find in new ones, because most of the current public isn't interested anymore. Encyclopedia's don't only update by adding more recent knowledge, but also by deleting older facts. And even if some of that old knowledge is actually obsolete in the true sense of the word, you would sometimes be surprised if you learned what that obsolete knowledge is (or was).

I will ask them to select which ones they can sell. Then I will take the rest home and consider what to do with them. I suspect a lot of them have no value in money, and I will certainly not spend a lot on postage or shipping - it is simply not worth it!

I might take some back to the UK and ask charity shops there whether they can sell them - the chances might be better at an Oxfam Academic bookshop or whatever they call themselves these days. (Some of my dictionaries came from there in the first place!)

Someone may enjoy my mother's embroidery stitches or the four-language visual dictionary, even though they date from the last century.

You then put all the books into a box and mail it to them with a postage-paid label and they transfer the money to your account. Tip: take photos of the books before you send them because they do inspect them and sometimes make mistakes.

Option 2 is to create a lot of books and sell them on ebay. You can find their resale value here:

I also remember a company that used to rent dictionaries (they used to attend the ATA conferences). This was handy when you only needed a dictionary for a specific project (back in the day when we also had months to complete a job). If you liked the dictionary, you could buy it and keep it by paying the difference between the sale price and the rental amount.

[Edited at 2026-07-08 19:33 GMT]
