This is sad to me.

As a newly graduated translator, I like to participate in contests to gain experience, find my inner style, build confidence, and a name for myself, in the literary world.

So, it's sad to learn that a translation contest gets tempered by the organizer itself.

Anyway, I haven't seen any actual winner for my language pair yet.

I lost all interest in translation contests few years ago, when I spotted an entry - a "translation into Serbian" - that was blatantly done by someone who doesn't know the first thing about the Serbian language but used some MT instead, and nothing was done to remove it.

If it was in the Proz contest, there is actually one fictional profile (GoTrans) that Proz uses to make MT entries (this was explained during the last Translation Day event).
It's a sort of gimmick which is there since quite some time to track I suppose the progress of machine translation.

creating fictional profiles that other contest participants have no ways of knowing are fictional ought to be against some rule - especially given that it was NEVER announced in any translation contest rule that MT posing as a fictional profile will be a participant. Well, these are good reasons. With my previous profile here at ProZ I was contestant in two or three contests for my language pair, and all without a winner.

You're right, Teresa. I've also found the same problem in most part of the entries in the pairs ES>PT and IT>PT.

Apparently, it’s no use, because last year, after I pointed out that many entries were by Brazilian translators, the winner was... a Brazilian. I have to say that the translation was good, but it contained two or three things that a PT(pt) translator notices straight away. Good luck!

Yes, you're right. At this point I usually ask for help from experienced members in the language pair to move entries to the correct pairs. If you could kindly point out the tranlations that need to be moved, I'd be very thankful.

Hi there,
In the last contest the tagging option was de-activated on purpose to try a new strategy but it will be available again from now on as it didn't help voters.
In the current contest, shorter source texts were chosen in order to make participation less time-consuming.
We're open to any suggestions or new ideas to keep improving the system.

Exposure of the contest??? Is it the last step before an offer from Simon and Schuster? How much does it cost to be exposed, and to what? Who in the professional literature/fiction world is aware of/interested in this contest, and how can this interest be verified before investing in it?

I think you’re missing the point Lucia. As a paying member I think my money should be used to make the competitions work and not waste so much of people’s time.

I haven’t seen one effort from ProZ to try to encourage voting after the last competition crash-landed. if you can’t make them work, you should stop doing them. What was it Einstein said about making the same mistake over and over again?

This is not a question coming out of thin air.

The last contest I wanted to participate had one "translation into Serbian" that had all the telling hallmarks of an uncorrected/unchecked MT output - so probably submitted by someone who doesn't speak a word of Serbian.

I signaled that to the contest organisers, but they did not remove it.

So ...

Can anyone confirm that MT/AI generated entries are prohibited?

I can’t believe ProZ chooses to limit participation when these competitions routinely don’t attract enough interest for winners to be chosen in most language pairs, thus wasting nearly everyone’s time. Why not reward people for participating rather than putting them off? Why not do something to get more votes and interest?
