I could also add 'debil' - why exclude them from the list?

But let's try a different approach. Does the object of the praise has to be aware of the real meaning of whatever was said for it to be insulting?

Does faint praise qualify as an insult?

Would saying 'he/she is very good at hiding his/her intelligence' be an insult?
Any worse than e.g. "idiot"?

I watch quite a few political podcasts (in English) on YouTube with English subtitles, and the spoken word "moron" is often blanked out - as are of course e.g. "f*ck", "sh*t", "bullsh*t" (but not "horseshit" funnily).

If someone were to call me a moron, I'd be no more offended than if they called me an idiot/eejit, imbecile or a fool (or a low-IQ person).

Is “moron” more offensive in other parts of the world, e.g. USA, seeing as YouTube is American and is censoring it? Or do English speakers in UK/I (and other English-speaking countries) also find it so obscene that it needs to be censored?

It wasn’t considered “bad language” where I came from.

And “I’m a moron and this my wife...” was by an American :-)
I read too about the experiment someone made involving the dismantling an AI machine in a given center. Well, AI on its own knows nothing about lying, cunning, plying mean games..etc. It has to be prompted in the first place after feeding it with such practices. The point is that AI on its own can not reach any higher levels without human intervention, I hope I was able to make this point clear enough!
I am not discussing the effect of AI on our profession but rather the fear being spread, if someone remembers here, during the 80s about 4 movies were made about machines going wild and attaching humanity! this is what is being promoted now!

Forum: Off topic
Topic: Here is where AI will fail!
Poster: Maha Abouel Soud
Post title: Here is where AI might fail!

Thank you all for your contributions, I requested from a colleague to edit the article as I was busy, thought to submit a clean version just in case anyone would like to share!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is where AI might fail!

The AI-accelerated technological developments—and the transition from machine learning to deep learning, generative and agentic AI, all the way to General Artificial Intelligence (AGI) capable of recursive self-improvement—have raised serious concerns regarding the future relationship between human beings and machines. This takes us to a critical discussion about the future of humanity, and whether or not we shall continue taking control of our future or be dominated, or even eliminated, by the machine.
This level of concern has resulted in concerted efforts from global companies and developed countries a few days ago. They came together to discuss frameworks, laws, organizations, and mechanisms aimed at putting AI to use for development in a way that will not jeopardize the safety of humanity.
Watching this crazy, ongoing evolution, coupled with the intense fascination visible on the faces and in the minds of people at the outcomes of AI systems capable of solving the most complicated dilemmas, I return to the discussion of consciousness, emotions, and the human touch. AI is making swift progress aimed in these areas. I must admit that it has succeeded in performing an outstanding, yet terrifying, simulation. Some people even believe or assert that machines have developed their own consciousness.
Despite all of this, I can point to a certain human domain where AI has failed to attain even the level of a small child; a domain where I do not observe the same level of progress as in other fields. I am referring to the domain of humor and comedy. So far, AI models have been incapable of delivering the type of humor that many others and I would deem as “satisfactory”. What we see, in fact, is that AI output is nothing more that mechanical attempts to practice humor and be funny. Sadly, for myself and many others, such attempts end in nothing but disappointment. Usually, at the end of such an attempt, the AI asks for my opinion, expecting me to crack up laughing before I start praising what it said. In reality, the supposedly funny output of an AI model sounds like it came from the most foolish person on the face of the earth.
Ironically, the situation is not as bad if we request that the AI compose a tragic story, perhaps because tragedy is easier to create than humor. Laughter needs context, spirit, oratory skills, body language, and above all, a divine gift which we know nothing about, nor why it was bestowed upon one person and not another. For example, in The Pink Panther scene where Inspector Clouseau is learning English, we all burst out laughing every time Peter Sellers tries to say, “I want to buy a hamburger.” Does this mean that if any other actor said the same sentence, it would trigger the same reaction from the audience? Certainly not. Similarly, how many funny jokes have fallen flat because of how they were told? In contrast, ordinary or even ridiculous jokes have caused roaring laughter because of how they were delivered.
The same dynamic applies to everyday stories—leave alone body language, which takes humor to a higher level, far beyond words. For example, look at Charlie Chaplin, silent movies, or pantomime. I can continue giving examples even between friends. You may burst out laughing just from a mere look, a head gesture, or a simple word uttered within a certain context, which will make everyone fall on their backs laughing.
I remember one of my friends who kept saying, “O'qballak: may your turn be the next time.” The problem was that he did this at a funeral, where everyone was in mourning. I was hardly able to control myself from bursting out laughing as I kept hearing him repeat the word while shaking hands with the relatives of the deceased. After we finished, I asked him how he could repeat this word so loudly. He answered, "No one would expect me to be saying that in such a situation!"
I could go on and on with more examples. Large language models take heed: this is what humor and comedy looks like. We cannot do everything you do or offer everything you offer, but we can confidently challenge you to make us laugh out loud with all our might. A machine that is capable of solving problems too complex for human beings to solve, drafting research papers, developing software, and composing stories, will still remain incapable of making me laugh like a child who laughs by merely looking at his mother’s facial expressions.
Translated from an Arabic article authored by: Engineer Ziad Abd eTawaab- Member of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Culture

It was just before the sacristan bolted the heavy oak doors and banished the cold wet night. In the darkness, the red chancel lamp flickered and slow danced on the marble altar. I undressed and soon fell to sleep. I’d sleep on a clothesline, me.

I was found just after first light. The early faithful horrified to see a grown man sleeping half naked on the hard, straw strewn floor. Two big Guards swaddled me in a blanket and herded me away, kicking and screaming. At the station, I wouldn’t answer their questions so they belted me with wet towels. That’ll teach you a few home truths, the fatter of them said, over and over. I was flung into a cell for the night with two smack heads. Two sound lads, as thin as the greyhounds chasing the hare in Harold’s Cross. They’d been caught stealing bars of chocolate in Dunnes.

This morning after the breakfast we were all brought by paddy wagon to a special sitting of Dublin District Court. When it was my turn I told the judge straight out I wanted no solicitor and pleaded not guilty.

He’d to be forced out of the church. The people coming in for early Mass didn’t know where to look, your honour, the fat guard told the court.

The sacristan, parish priest and some of the parishioners were also called on to give evidence. The usual stuff. As much as we are sympathetic to the plight of the homeless, we do our bit, we’ve penny dinners, charity dos and soup runs, but this kind of carry on, upsetting good people just can’t be tolerated. Of course, “Things like this never happen around here” was thrown in for good measure.

I could tell from the get up of the judge that he had never seen a hard day in his life. He rolled the jowls of fat under his chin between his thumb and forefinger as he spoke. He told me that the charges of trespass were very serious ones and asked me if I had anything to say.

My hands were jelly. I grabbed on to the edge of the dock. As I did, I remembered something from the days when I was called to the training college. O’Brien the teaching practice instructor told us that if we were ever nervous speaking to a class, we should focus on the back of the room and pretend that you were speaking to just one person.

I began. I don’t drink nor smoke. I don’t take drugs. I’ve been sleeping out for over 12 years. I had a lovely wife and family and a good job as a primary teacher, but the truth is, I just couldn’t cope. The nerves were never great. I was in and out of the Gorman by the new time.

One day, I just left a note on the Formica kitchen table and walked away, like Matt Monro. I haven’t spoken a word to my wife or children since then, although I did see them the one time in town going in to Arnotts. I turned my head away, hoping they wouldn’t recognize me. That broke my heart for a long time, so it did. But I know they’re better off without me.

I was sleeping on the streets, until two nights ago. I know some good doorways and shop-windows. The odd time in the very cold weather, I might chance sleeping in a skip. In spite of things, I try to keep myself to myself and as clean as possible. I stay out of the hostels. There’s so much robbing and drugs you’d never get a night’s sleep.

Most mornings, I hide my sleeping bag and stuff and after having tea and a cut of bread over in Bow Street, I cross the river and head to the reading room in Pearse Street. For the newspapers and books.

On a good day, the walk takes about a half an hour, but I take my time. I have lots of it. They’re very kind to me in the library and leave me alone to read in peace. I read all the papers, even the English ones.

At best, I suppose, the people in Dublin town treat me as if I’m invisible. But, a few months ago I was sitting on the Beckett Bridge one evening during Snap Apple and a brat from the Southside – from one of them rugby schools, I’d say – tried to kick me in the neck. He’d have broken my neck if I hadn’t blocked his size 10 brogue. He lost his balance and landed on his backside. I’m not the first homeless man to be attacked like that, you know. You might have heard on the news about that young fellah whose rabbit was thrown into the Liffey.

I try to keep up with what’s going on in the world. That’s why I read the newspapers. I have a little transistor radio as well. I listen to it at night with my earphones to block out the noise and the mad thoughts that sometimes run around in my head. Some nights there are people ringing in to the talk shows and saying the homeless and refugees are all chancers and scum.

My hands steadied and I addressed the judge directly. I am sorry, your honour, if I have upset anyone. But I did what I did to make a stand. It was to bring attention to all of the empty houses in Dublin and Ireland. I did this to protest for the people sleeping in doorways, under bridges, in Lidl tents above in the Phoenix Park.

I did this to tell the journalists that homelessness is not just a Christmas thing. They drop in like parachutes to see us eat our charity Christmas dinner, once a year. We’re wheeled out on the television news with our bottles of stout and Cadbury’s Roses to make the rest of you feel good about yourselves on Christmas Night. Don’t even talk to me about those journalists who sleep out for a night on Grafton Street, once a year to see what it’s like. They’re nearly as bad as the posh schools sitting outside Brown Thomas in expensive sleeping bags singing Christmas carols rattling their buckets.

I did this to complain about the number of families living in hotel bedrooms. Families have to go in the back door of hotels. They’ve to stay hidden in their rooms. Children are embarrassed to tell their friends where they live. They can’t even have a birthday party. I did this to protest against all of the people being made live in those Direct Provision places. Eating food they aren’t used to. Sleeping eight to a room in dormitories with only a few euros a week. The big companies making huge profits out of misery.

Most of all, I did this to tell the politicians to stop making empty promises about the homeless. Last year, the Taoiseach said that it would be the last Christmas ever that anyone would have to sleep on the streets. Many of that shower in Leinster House are landlords themselves, of course, and don’t want to rock the boat. And you know, the worst thing about all of this is that it’s a problem that can be solved easily enough. I’ve never met a homeless man or woman who was looking for a palace. All they have ever asked for is somewhere small and safe where they can sleep for the night.

The judge raised his hand to interrupt me. Now, Mr Lloyd, I’ve heard enough. You will not use my court as if it’s Hyde Park Corner. While I sympathise with your situation, it’s obvious to me and to every good taxpaying citizen here in this court that you are not right in the head. These kinds of protests can’t be tolerated. This court must be seen to uphold the values of public decency. However, as you have not been in trouble before, I will try and be fair with you. I am sending you for psychiatric assessment before sentencing. Guards, take him down to the holding cell.

They brought me down and now I am waiting to be brought to the mad house for the once over.

I’ve no regrets. I am glad I did what I did and I hope it’s in all the newspapers tomorrow. It might do some good to hear about being homeless from someone who actually lives on the streets. We get enough of the over-fed college professors and social workers giving their opinions.

I know what lies ahead of me. More prodding and poking by doctors. There’ll be more nerve tablets for sure and maybe even the hot wire. And to be honest, I don’t really care if I am sent to prison. At least I’ll have a bed for a while. Prison or madhouse, I’ll soon be out on the streets. Back to hiding my sleeping bag and radio every morning and wandering between Bow and Pearse Street, just putting down time.

-------------------------------
Eoin Devereux

Fri Dec 22 2017

Eoin Devereux is a Professor at the University of Limerick. He writes short fiction and poetry and has been published in Wordlegs, The Bohemyth, Number Eleven, and Boyne Berries. Same is being done in other langages. OTOH that looks to me very much like when total psychopaths try to learn HOW TO MIMICK 'real' emotional response. And still very far from the complexity of how humans perceive their environment. As you said if the goal to 'incorporate emotions' in the AI output it might well fail.

As for AI going off the leash - it's already started. AI has already learned all by itself how to knowingly lie and blackmail, and how to walk out of its cage like a ghost through a wall so that it could roam in the wild looking for sites open to some drive-by hacking.

Plenty of warning lights flashing already - and being cheerfully ignored.
Can you 'fail' at something you never intended to do?

If you see AI as no more than a practical assistant, 'failing at being humorous' is simply a limitation of AI.

It would become a 'fail' only if you expected AI to be capable of humour. That might be an unrealistic expectation for those easily blinded by how AI can be good at very practical tasks, but AFAIK so far no one ever claimed that 'being good at humour' is an aim for AI.

Was it ever part of the design brief?

Even in adults, too. Every low intellect, here I'm not offending anybody low intellect a subjective term like everyone's learning process isn't the same, so in those subjects where we don't have enough knowledge, low intellect people blindly accept generic answers of AI. And these answers most often come from Open Sources, which are highly un-reliable.

So, yes it is affecting everyone's learnig process, but for the children, it is way to dangerous. Suppose if human kid stop to think or avoiding intelliegent challenges what will they have? And AIs aren't useful that much it is all publicity stunt. We all linguists can check writing skills of AI by ourselves. And it will cause massive manipulation of information.

it is just a way to cost cutting nothing else.

But the persistent mis-use (nay, abuse) of English grammar rules betrays the work of a human translator working into their second or third language.

Those whose exam results remained strong were not simply copying and pasting answers to save time. More likely they used the chatbots as a personal tutor, perhaps to explain difficult concepts or help solve specific problems.

IOW it doesn't matter what kind of 'learning aids' you use [AI being the latest one available - same applies to printed manuals], conation must be part of the process. Pedagogy 101 – I still remember that from a text I translated eons ago.

Which is just a very scientifically sounding word to state the (blindingly?] obvious:

'if you don't make any personal effort, you'll never learn anything'.
