These people can't even write proper English in their advertisement. | | | Low rates, old news | Jun 2, 2008 |
Last week I was contacted by a agency (based in Western Europe) for a 'very urgent' translation of a 'highly technical' manual (only available in PDF) containing about 100 pages. And they were 'willing' to pay €10 per page of about 300 words, i.e. €0.03/word. (Very) old news indeed. Reminds me of an Einstein quote: Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.

You don't pay the CD or the DVD. That's a relief. What would the poor CD or DVD do with the money? | | | Last week, 'potential' work was offered by a colleague for 3 to 4 US cents a word | Jun 2, 2008 |

Reminds me of an Einstein quote: Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe. I agree with Evert. It's old news. For instance, last week, when a fellow translator offered 3 to 4 US cents a word for potential work in several language pairs, I thought no one would answer. Well, 131 of US, ie people on Proz, have responded so far. So this is indeed very old news and given how many have responded to get work at 3 to 4 US cents a word, a dumping rate if there ever was one, I'd say that any further discussions about low rates are pretty pointless. Clearly there are a great many colleagues who have no objection whatsoever.
Their message is just a poor translation from French. You can spot that in some of the sentences, you can easily read the French behind them. You pay peanuts you get nuts... However it seems there is a big tendency towards low rates or non payments. There are many posts by other colleagues telling us so and this makes me think that "our" market is strongly affected by the crisis. What do you think? Sorry you're right, get monkeys...

There are many posts by other colleagues telling us so and this makes me think that "our" market is strongly affected by the crisis. What do you think? Yes, I can vouch for that tendency, I see it day in, day out. They will carry on pushing prices lower, as long as they are able to find cheap, low-quality labour. If they want quality, we should not decrease our rates. Otherwise, we are actually shooting ourselves in the foot. LET US STOP THIS PRICE DUMPING!!! And, by the way... 'Pay peanuts, get monkeys'. That is the right saying | | | Allegedly no machine translation | Jun 2, 2008 |
Ramon Inglada wrote: If this is representative of the quality they can offer... although, for 0.05€, what can anyone expect? Machine-translation with a human editor (probably a trainee or something)... No Ramón. They clearly state that "Our all activity fields translations are made by specialized translators, sworn translators and native speakers.". So no machine translation here... as far as they want to tell... In any case, their customers will soon experience the "specialized translators"... | | | Trudy Peters United States Local time: 23:57 German to English + ...
You can't assume that all the translators that responded are willing to work at that rate. Many (I hope) may have just told the oursourcer how ridiculous their offer was. | | | Offering their services, not looking for translators | Jun 2, 2008 |
Trudy Peters wrote: You can't assume that all the translators that responded are willing to work at that rate. Many (I hope) may have just told the oursourcer how ridiculous their offer was. Thanks Trudy. Actually they are offering their services, not looking for translators. They must be looking for translators by some other means. In my case, I have written back asking them how much are they paying their translators if they would charge us 5 cents...

I saw the same job as you quoted from later, and indeed I was contacted by email before the job was posted - I guess I should be flattered in some way. But as I was blathering on last week, I think we there are definitely different markets, or segements, depending on how you see it. The cheap and cheerful end, and the quality specialists end. And I think one can move from one to the other, and be caught in the middle - nothing is black and white. Well, nothing except that I'd rather stack supermarket shelves than work for 4 US cents a word, and that people working in that market are no colleagues of mine. | | | Pages in topic: [1 2 3 4 5 6 7] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » All translations 0,05 cents, VAT and surtaxes included....
