Hi friends,
I got a big file consisting of more than 100 pages for translation from English into Hindi. In fact, the text is given in tabulated form and there are two columns and both of them contain the same English text. I was required to provide the translation in the right column against the corresponding English text which is in left side.

Since the file was heavy and it was taking a lot of time to go to the next segment to translate, I translated it by dividing it many pieces by cutting and pasting the right column. I know since the translation is stored in memory, I can translate the tabulated file with its help but the problem is that the text in the left side also gets translated which should remain in English only.
I'd be thankful if you could suggest a solution for this problem.

You don't say, but I presume we are talking about a MSWord file. Simply hide the left column and import the file into TagEditor (provided you don't use Studio, you don't say this, too... I haven't tried this with Studio yet...)
TagEditor will translate only the right column. Once you are done, save as target only and unhide in MSWord the left column.

on the column that you don't want to translate.
If this style does not exist, simply create it. Note that it is a character style and not a paragraph style.
Trados ingores this text when translating.

I forgot to mention that I use Trados Freelance 7.0, Windows XP and MS Word 2003.
Yes, I am talking about a MS Word file.
Could you please guide me how to apply the tw4win External style on column?

First, create a "tw4winExternal" style in Word:
1. If the Styles and Formatting pane is not open, click Format -> Styles and Formatting to open it.
2. In the Styles and Formatting pane, click New Style.
3. In the Name text box, enter tw4winExternal.
4. In the Style type dropdown list, choose Character.
5. Click Format -> Font, set the font color to gray and click OK.

I have a slightly different problem - I regularly work for an agency who uses DéjàVu.
So they will send me a word (rtf) file consisting of a table with two columns. On the left is the source text. On the right, because they have run it through their TM, there is a mixture of translated segments, that I am supposed to check, and untranslated segments that are still in the source language.

I know that ideally the agency would give me a TM that I could import into Studio. I could then translate with the original source document and give them a TM that they could import into Déjà Vu. But they seem unsure about this and are probably worried that it would create extra work and make proof reading more complicated.... ▲ Collapse

I have the same problem with files from a particular agency. They're insisting that they need their translation back in the same two column format but I can't find a convenient way of translating these files in Trados

The answer is obvious, but the first time it seems a bit strange. Just copy the file, and in the second file delete everything that doesn't have to be translated. Translate this second file as usual with Trados or the CAT you want. When it's ready, cut and paste the translations in the original file and send this one back to your client.
