Gastric disorders? Sep 27, 2010

No gastric disorders here, but emotional exhaustion and RSI, yes - definitely. I'm almost back to my 100% old self now, thank goodness

What a bizarre question! How could there possibly be a causal link between translation and gastric disorders?

Stress can be the link Sep 27, 2010

Stress at work can cause a lot of disorders! A friend of mine, not a translator, has been suffering from hair loss since she started working.

Back aches Sep 27, 2010

Hi all,

I've been suffering a bit from back aches, resolved easily by resting or sleeping for 1-2 hours per day. The best therapy is a massage once per month, it's wonderful and brought 100% relief to my symptoms.

I also don't like staying up to 3 am in the morning; it's not worthwhile and you have to pay for the medical bills later.

Actually, stomach ulcers are predominant in people who sit too long at the PC.

Best to rest for a while after meals before resuming work. A nice walk would be great.

Following certain (non-healthy) food habits, not eating for long times (to meet a deadline), also some abdominal pains may result from sitting for long periods. And as Luisa pointed out, stress can cause pains in different parts of the body. A veteran translator I know and had the honor of working with for a while, is having troubles with peptic ulcers.

That's how I got the question. Yet, so far my stomach is detached from any professional harms. Other parts are still pending on the list, waiting for the (right) time.

Controlling our response to stress Sep 27, 2010

Except for occasional all-nighters, which definitely take a temporary toll, I think we should be able to control our physical response to stress.

If I have stress-related health issues, how am I to know that I wouldn't have had to same issues while pursuing another profession, a volunteer activity, studies, or a hobby?

Yes Sep 27, 2010

My gastric disorders are also down to stress and they began when I started working freelance, so maybe there is a link.

It has also caused weight gain, since now I spend more time sitting indoors.

Cheers,

Yes, but only indirectly Sep 27, 2010

This profession sometimes causes me not to get as much sleep as I should. That and/or stress sometimes affects my digestion. It's not industry-specific, or indeed work-specific, however, as others have already said. There are all kinds of other aspects of life that can have the same effect.

For me, such symptoms are a sign that I need to slow down, get more sleep and take better care of myself!

My stomach is fine Sep 27, 2010

My stomach is fine, but I sit too much and as a result my back is not so fine anymore. I excersise, swim but still. Some days I work with my laptop lying on a couch - it helps. And I'm happy that my customers don't see me in this wotking position

What is it with the doom-and-gloom polls over the last couple of weeks? Sep 27, 2010

Is the staff member selecting them trying to tell us or their boss something?
