grammatical errors? Aug 17, 2011

Huh… grammatical errors? The day Google Translate can produce grammatically correct translations I’ll believe it.

I think the advice about fixing one's grammar on one's web site relates to the idea that users will spend more time on sites with good grammar, and Google tracks the time that users spend on sites (e.g. via the Google Toolbar in their browsers). The advice is therefore geared towards keeping people on your site longer... and some of the advice is quite silly (but potentially true), such has having embedded video on your site, so that users spend more time on the site because they're watching the video (or part of it). Perhaps I should place a funny translation-related video on each of my web site's pages...

I just did a search for my keywords (english+afrikaans+translator), and I'm happy that the grey-hat translation agencies seem to have been penalised (those that create an automated page for every language in the world, with no actual useful content on it). Unfortunately Google's definition of "translation" seems to be dictionary searches and phrase lookups (perhaps that is what most people want when they type in "translation" in a search), so now my keywords result in lots of MT and small-text translation portals... with actual translation sites only starting at around result #30 or so. However, when I add a word to the query that you'll likely find an a professional translator web site, like "rates", my site pops up at #2.
