Norton Internet Security is not the cheapest software but absolutely reliable. I never had any problems. AntiVir is not bad but forget about Zone Alarm.

I am using McAffee. It's the priciest I admit, but they got the best quality ratings. They update automatically at least 3 times a week, sometimes twice a day. I also use McAffee Firewall.

There are several "free" antivirus solutions. The licence for a "pro" usage is quite reasonable and you can use the personal edition for a while in order to test them.

In addition, it's good to be very careful in handling e-mails that look strange or unusual. Just delete them even befor downloading them on your PC, via a webmail or any other tool that could check e-mails remotely (e-prompter, ...).
Those are just a few leads.

I'm the member of many yahoogroups and I was gifted Blackworm through it though I usually don't open suspicious mails or websites. Then that worm started sending the mails in my name to others. So I sent mails to all my contacts not to open the letters with attachements in my name and updated and run the norton AVS. Also I wrote the letters to my mail-servers viz. yahoo, hotmail, gmail etc. and followed the instructions given by them time to time. So today I'm sure that my computer is virus free... I used to have Norton, but would never use it again. It caused serious trouble on my PC.
Kaspersky is good, however, real-time monitoring needs a lot of memory, and can slow my PC down at times. It is also very slow when scanning the complete system (I guess, most AV programs are very slow in this respect).
If things need to go fast and I can't afford to have Kaspersky use up my memory, I run ClamAV via Cygwin on Win XP, which does a great job.

I use Norton, which works a treat, although I've used Mcaffee in the past with no problems. I've also got Spyware Doctor, a cheap program that costs approx GBP 15 and is great at picking up all those malicious little bugs that hide away in your software and steal your passwords.

You are right Sonja. Kaspersky is very good and can be used instead of Norton Anti-Virus but you still need a Firewall protection.

I agree that running a decent anti-virus is absolutely essential these days. However, viruses aren't the only nasties out there. Just think of all the trojan horses, spyware, dialers and other malware. Therefore, I also use a firewall, a good anti-trojan and a couple of anti-spyware apps. Maybe I'm sort of paranoid, I don't know, but what I do know for sure is that my machine has never been infected.

Sadly because of a combination of malicious attitudes by some people, extremely poor software design and development skills (or perhaps deliberate design faults) it is a necessary evil to have anti-virus software and firewalls at least running on each of your computers.
However having said that, personal experience has shown up the following:

However having said that, personal experience has shown up the following:
Norton/Symantec AV software - very large footprint on the system and in main memory terms. If your limited on the memory you have in your computer then you will find that this software eats up main memory making the operation of simple task switching between applications really sluggish - make sure you have plenty of main memory to Norton/Symantec. Tried running it on machines with 64/128/256 MB - this was back a year or so ago and that was a reasonable amount of memory then. Also found real problems with it interfering with other applications and corrupting its own configuration - actually turning itself off without letting on.
McAfee - smaller footprint in main memory which means that there is more space for the applications you are actually trying to use to do work. However, configuration really irritating (don't try expanding font sizes on your with McAfee because it fails to scale it's dialogs). Also you can't turn off the check for updates (where you want to do it manually). It has an option but still keeps bugging you. Online/phone support - hopeless. Like Norton/Symantec once they have your money I have found they are not interested in sorting problems out. Used it for many years and have seen it get worse and worse.
AVG (Grisoft) - So far a nice unobtrusive program. Early days yet but preferred choice so far.
Why the title? Basically because the only reason these pieces of software are needed is because Microsoft is unwilling to fix the problems they have put into their operating systems (these are design faults or features not problems due to the complexity). By default these operating systems are easily open to attack which is not the case with others such as BSD, Unix and some others. ▲ Collapse

Neither woman nor man can enter your computer unauthorized, when you use Norman. Being not too much woman oriented, the producer of this product skipped the "neither woman" part in the brand name and had left "Norman".
Before Norman I used Norton, but my shop recommended Norman. OK man, I can't help so!
