[…] The Hoover Police Department today announced the force is deploying a new mobile device that will, in real-time, interpret conversations with non-English speaking citizens. The hands-free ELSA (Enabling Language Service Anywhere) device uses cellular technology to connect directly with interpreters in 180 languages and dialects.
Hoover police spokesman Capt. Gregg Rector said the program was developed for law enforcement, medical first responders and healthcare facilities. At the press of one button, he said, the device connects with a bilingual interpreter within seconds. An ELSA subscription also provides a toll-free number for cell and landline use that provides the same service as the portable device. More.
