Vintage Classics has acquired a new translation of Homer’s The Iliad by classics scholar and author Caroline Alexander.

Laura Hassan, editorial director at RH imprint Vintage Classics, bought exclusive UK and British Commonwealth rights (including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and India), as well as non-exclusive rights throughout the rest of the world except the US and Canada. The deal was struck through Daniel Halpern, publisher of Ecco, an imprint of HarperCollins.

Alexander studied as a Rhodes Scholar at Somerville College, Oxford and received her doctorate in Classics at Columbia University. While in her twenties, she received a commission to set up a Classics Department at the University of Malawi. She is a contributing writer for National Geographic Magazine and her most recent book is The War that Killed Achilles (Faber).

The new translation of The Iliad will be published in hardback in 2014.
