Role of translators vs. interpreters gets clarified on radio program

Source: NPR
Story flagged by: RominaZ

On its coverage of the news about the White House press conference featuring the Chinese President, NPR misused the term “translator” to refer to the role of the interpreter.

Judy Jenner, who is both a translator and an interpreter herself, sent an email to NPR pointing out that translators work with the written word and interpreters do so with the spoken word. Therefore, the phrase “speaking through a translator” was wrong. Following up on this topic and to get things right, NPR phoned Corinne McKay to look for a quote on the topic. Listen to the story.
