HT Media Ltd. is looking to expand its print, radio and online businesses through acquisitions and tie-ups, as it seeks to benefit from growing demand for information and entertainment in a robust economy.

HT Media, one of India’s largest media houses, plans to buy Hindi and regional-language newspapers, nearly triple the number of its FM radio stations and induct a strategic partner to help launch a real-estate portal, Vinay Mittal, chief financial strategist at HT Media, said in a recent interview.

India is one of the largest newspaper markets globally with more than 107 million copies circulated every day, accounting for more than 20% of all dailies in the world. The English-language newspaper market in India is steadily growing and enjoys the largest share of the print industry’s total revenue. But publishers such as HT Media are bullish on the regional language markets, where revenue is expected to catch up with that of English-language dailies.

According to a joint study by KPMG and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Hindi-language market is likely to grow 11% annually from 2011 to 2015, vernacular dailies by 12% while the English-language market is projected to grow 7% a year.

For its flagship newspaper–the Hindustan Times–HT Media is pushing to increase circulation in the lucrative Mumbai market, where it lags behind the Times of India.

HT Media has increased the English newspaper’s circulation to about 400,000 copies a day from about 280,000 to 300,000 copies a year earlier, Mittal said. It has also cut its subscription costs to 149 rupees a year from 199 rupees in the past six months. Subscription of Hindustan Times in Mumbai is about 60% of its total circulation in the city.
