In Phoenix hospitals the language barrier seems more pervasive. Some people have lived there for 20 or 30 years and still know no English. In a clinic day, it is estimated that more than half of the patients need a Spanish translator.
Translation is a necessity given that more than 34 million foreign-born people live in the United States.
When live interpreters aren’t available, many hospitals have special language phones.

I hope they have gotten their priorities straightened out in Phoenix. A few years ago I stopped to spend the night at a motel near Phoenix and happened to watch a "job bank" program on TV. The jobs offered included janitor and Spanish interpreter at a Phoenix hospital. Guess which job paid a higher salary? Yes, you guessed it folks, the janitor position!
