I bet you’ve had an experience with speech technology and haven’t realized it. I’m not talking about Apple’s (AAPL) Siri voice interface, although given sales of Apple’s iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 it has helped bring speech recognition technology into the forefront of the consumer mind. Rather, I’m talking about the automated voice you hear when you make a call to a bank such as Bank of America (BAC), Wells Fargo (WFC), or E-Trade (ETFC). Financial institutions aren’t the only ones using speech recognition technology to automate customer service, others are doing as well from utilities, consumer product companies and the like.

The semantic web basically means the famework being built to facilitate that content on the web has machine-understandable meaning, rather than simply being searchable by keyword.
