Yumiko Kotake, 59, has translated Alice Munro’s short-story collection “Dear Life” into Japanese, and the book was published on Dec. 10, the same day that a ceremony was held to award the Canadian writer the Nobel Prize in Literature.

According to Kotake, Munro’s works contain “descriptions of mundane everyday lives, along with a wistfulness and an uplifting power that can be vividly felt. That’s what’s so appealing about this book.”

Munro’s short stories are often set in rural Canadian towns. The Japanese edition of “Dear Life” was published by Shinchosha Publishing Co.

Kotake lives in an eastern suburb of Takamatsu, and like Munro, she raised three children. She has also introduced outstanding works of foreign literature to a new audience. More.
