About me
- Native Dutch speaker. Born (two miles from the German border) and raised in the Netherlands in an area where Twents (Dutch Low Saxon dialect) is widely spoken.

- Completed chemistry (vocational) and geological studies (university) in the Netherlands. B.Sc. geology with mathematics, chemistry and physics, and M.Sc. (actually “ABD”) geology.

- Fluent English. I studied English at high school and am married to an Irish (who is presently doing the CELTA course). I lived, and was based in the English speaking world for most of the time since 1980. I wrote and edited numerous reports that were in English and passed the “Test of English as a Foreign Language” (TOEFL).

- German speaking. I studied German at high school and traveled extensively in Germany (holidays, fieldwork), spent 16 months in the NATO and worked during a holiday there. Worked one year for a German company in Turkey.

- I studied French at high school (but have not used it much) and studied Swedish, Spanish Portuguese. I am able to read these languages and am able to read Farsi script. Presently I am studying Krio, (a Sierra Leonean language).

- I am interested in linguistics because of my background and because I traveled extensively and lived/worked for longer periods in many countries (Netherlands, Germany, Canada, USA, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Sweden, Costa Rica, Brazil, Turkey, Iran, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Angola) and for shorter periods in some other countries (Scandinavia, West and South Europe, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Liberia, Guinea, Zambia, South Africa) where I not only had to deal with the official language but – while usually working in the back country with local people - was also exposed to native languages such as Twi, Krio, and Chokwe.
