Professional English <> Dutch translatorEnglish translator with ample academic writing and general translation experience. A high level of education in a language-related field (PhD in Comparative Literature) and a proven track record in research and English teaching give me the language skills and understanding of sound research needed to deliver accurate and well-written translations. I am meticulous and conscientious in my translation practice, and deploy my research skills to come up with a fitting translation for even the most complex and culturally-specific texts.
I translate to English from Dutch and to Dutch from English. Dual native proficiency in English and Dutch enables me to offer unique and unrivalled understanding, both in terms of semantics and syntax, of two languages. There is nothing that escapes me in these two languages, also because I have lived major parts of my life in the UK and the Netherlands.
As an added service I can also offer translations from Spanish. Living in Spain, and with an English teaching background in Mexico, I have accrued excellent understanding of the Spanish language, both Castillian and Mexican Spanish. Seeing as this is wholly post-childhood acquired proficiency, it is not, and will never be, 100%. I therefore do not offer translations into Spanish.
My history as a translator spans the best part of six years, and started out as a sideline to my teaching work. In Mexico I did translation and interpreting work for a range of US companies (Cummins, 3M and General Electric) with operations in the city of San Luis Potosi, where I lived. After that I moved to Spain to work as an in-house translator at a major translation agency. In 2005, I spread my wings and went solo.
I specialize in business-related translations, with a special focus on marketing (branding) and advertising, both in a meta sense (i.e. academic texts about marketing/brand management) and a direct sense (i.e. actual advertising copy and promotional texts), all texts that require creative skills (transcreation) and flowing and readable style. My past projects include several marketing books, a range of articles on marketing, branding and advertising, and I am a regular partner for different multinational companies for the translation of their (internal) newsletters.
