Source text - German Auf Sylt gab es einen Gott für den Sommer und einen anderen für den Winter: Der Sommergott wurde in der Kirche angebetet und der Allmächtige genannt. Der andere, der Wintergott, war Kapitän Rune Boys, und der stand eben ganz oben auf den Dünen, die Beine
in den schweren Lederstiefeln weit auseinander, die Arme im Rücken verschränkt, und betrachtete wohlwollend seine Schäfchen, die eifrig und gebückt auf dem hellen Sandstrand hin und her liefen. Er war ein
großer Mann mit einem dichten schwarzen Bart, hellen, beinahe stechenden Augen und Haaren, die mindestens so lang waren wie die vom gekreuzigten Jesus, so wie er in der kleinen Kirche von Rantum hing. Er trug dunkelgraue Hosen aus Hirschleder und seine Seemannsjacke, doch er sah damit keineswegs nur wie irgendein Seemann aus, sondern – groß und stolz wie er war – eben wie der Mann, der im Winter über die gesamte Insel herrschte.
Wie Rune Boys zum Wintergott von Sylt wurde, wussten nur noch die alten Leute. Er war schon sehr früh zur See gefahren, gerade einmal elf Jahre war er alt gewesen. Er hatte seinen Vater und seinen Schwager auf einem Walfänger als Schiffsjunge begleitet. Und dann war das Schiff im Eis vor Grönland steckengeblieben, und beinahe die
gesamte Mannschaft war verhungert. Nur Rune Boys und seinem Schwager war es gelungen, der eisigen Todesfalle zu entkommen. Es hieß, der Junge hätte dabei seinen Schwager gerettet, doch das ließ sich nicht mehr feststellen, denn der Schwager war nach dem Tod seiner Frau – Rune Boys’ Schwester – ein Jahr später aufs Festland geflohen. Und wieder hieß es, dass die Flucht auf Veranlassung von dem damals zwölfjährigen Rune Boys geschah. Niemand wusste genau, was damals wirklich passiert war – niemand außer einer Frau. Fest stand nur, dass der Schwager nicht freiwillig gegangen war. Aber was immer die Leute auch sprachen, eines war klar: Rune Boys hatte die Insel fest in seiner Hand. Er war zwar nicht der Landvogt, doch sein Wort hatte großes Gewicht. Selbst die Älteren hörten auf das, was er sagte, denn seit seinem Überleben draußen im Eismeer hieß es, er sei von den Göttern begünstigt und habe mehr Kräfte und mehr Grips als jeder andere Mann auf der Insel. Er wusste, was in jedem einzelnen Haus vor sich ging, er sorgte für Recht und Ordnung
und wurde aufgrund seines Gerechtigkeitssinnes von allen respektiert und von den Frauen sogar bewundert und verehrt. Trotz der allgemeinen Bewunderung, die er genoss, war er doch ein Einzelgänger, und keiner wusste, wie es in seinem Herzen und in seinem Kopf wirklich aussah. Auch jetzt nicht, wo er auf der Düne
thronte und wie Gottvater im Himmel seine Schäfchen betrachtete.
Translation - English On the Island of Sylt, there was one god for the summer and another for the winter. The summer god was worshipped in church and referred to as the Almighty. The other, the winter god, was Captain Rune Boyse. On this day, he stood atop the dunes, feet planted wide in heavy leather boots, arms crossed over his chest. He was observing his flock, their backs hunched under their loads, as they rushed over the bright sandy beaches collecting flotsam left by the storm. Boyse was a large man with a thick black beard, brilliant piercing eyes, and hair almost as long as that of the crucified Jesus which hung in the little village church in Rantum. He wore charcoal-gray breeches of tanned deer hide and his sailor’s jacket, but he didn’t look at all like a sailor. He looked like the man who ruled the entire island in winter.
Only the older folks still remembered how Rune Boyse had become the winter god of Sylt. He had gone to sea for the first time when he was young, barely eleven years old when he joined his father and brother-in-law on a whaling ship as a ship’s boy. The ship had become stuck in the ice near Greenland, and almost the entire crew had starved to death. Only Rune Boyse and his brother-in-law managed to escape the icy grave. Rumor had it that the boy had saved his sister’s husband’s life, but it couldn’t be proven, because the man had left for the mainland a year later, after his wife died. Rumor had it, too, that young Boyse had encouraged him to leave. No one on the island knew the details, no one except for one woman. The rest only knew that Boyse’s brother-in-law hadn’t left Sylt of his own free will. But whatever the rumors were, one thing was clear: Rune Boyse held the island tightly in his grip. He wasn’t a governor, but his word had great weight among the people. Even the elders listened to what he had to say. Since he had survived out on the frozen sea, it was said that he was favored by the old gods, and was stronger and cleverer than any other man on the island. He knew what went on in every household, upheld law and order, and was respected by everyone for his sense of justice. He was especially admired among the women. Despite the admiration he received, he chose to remain alone, and no one knew the intimacies of his heart or mind. Not even now, as he reigned over the dunes, watching his flock like the Almighty Father in heaven.
