I am delighted to have this opportunity to describe to you some of the most wonderful and fascinating aspects of the Universe, and of my group's astrophysical investigations. I am a professor of astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley, where I teach classes and conduct research on many topics.
I hope you will find this to be an entertaining and enlightening birthday present, one that will introduce you to some of the frontiers of astronomy.
I will discuss three main topics: (1) How some stars explode at the ends of their lives, creating the heavy elements of which we are made; (2) how some stars produce black holes, which are regions of space where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape; and (3) how the expansion of the Universe is becoming faster and faster, driven by mysterious "dark energy."
Let me start with the first topic, the death of stars. Our own Sun, a typical star, will die rather quietly, without exploding violently. It is currently fusing hydrogen into helium in its center, where temperatures are very high, at a steady rate so that it has a constant brightness.
But eventually, in about 5 billion years, the Sun will gradually become much brighter and larger, and everything on Earth will be fried -- we had better move to another planet or even another solar system long before that happens!
Then the Sun will gently blow off its outer atmosphere of gases, causing them to expand outward and shine. The result is a beautiful object called a "planetary nebula" because in small telescopes they can resemble the disks of planets. Here are some examples of these wonderful objects; you can see the dying star in the center, and the shells of gases slowly expanding away.
The dying star will eventually become a "white dwarf", a very small star about the size of the Earth, instead of 100 times larger than the Earth like our Sun is now.
But some stars literally explode at the end of their lives. Here is an example of one; you can see the star before and after it exploded. If you like fireworks shows, you can't do any better than watching stars explode!
These ``supernovae'' are the most energetic phenomena known in the Universe. They can become a few billion times as powerful as the Sun. So, if our Sun were to explode in this way, then sunblock lotion of only 50 wouldn't provide much protection. You would need sunblock of a few thousand million! Fortunately for us, our Sun will not suddenly explode.
Supernovae are very important. Through nuclear reactions during the explosions, they create heavy elements and eject them into space, as you can see in this animation. Elements like the carbon in your cells, the oxygen that you breathe, the calcium in your bones, and the iron in your red blood cells are produced within stars and ejected into space, making them available as the raw material for new stars, new planets, and ultimately life.
We have analyzed the expanding gases in supernova remnants such as the Crab nebula, which resulted from an explosion nearly 1000 years ago, and we see heavy elements that could not have been present in large quantities when the star was first born.
These gases continue to expand for thousands of years, such as in the case shown here, but eventually they merge with other clouds of gas and become gravitationally bound in gigantic nebulae, like this one.
Within the dense clouds of gas, gravitational collapse occurs and new stars are formed. Around some of those new stars there are disks of gas and other debris, which can contract to form new planets. Some of those planets may be rocky, Earth-like planets. And in some cases, complex molecules like DNA can form, the basis of life. Here I show you some of my DNA.
My research group at Berkeley is studying the process by which some massive stars explode, and which heavy elements they produce.
But stars explode only very rarely, perhaps once per galaxy in a century. So, I would not find many supernovae if I stared through the eyepiece of a telescope at a single galaxy each night.
Fortunately, with modern technology, there is a better method.
You can attach an electronic camera, such as a CCD camera, to your telescope and take photographs of thousands of galaxies, and simply look for arrows! See, it worked here, here, here, and here -- it must work every time!
Well, of course I am joking; we put in the arrows after discovering the supernova! But I have a robotic telescope at Lick Observatory, about a two-hour drive from here, and it automatically takes photographs of more than 1000 relatively nearby galaxies each night, close to 10,000 each week. It compares the new images with the old images, and usually these look the same, but sometimes a new object appears; this is a supernova candidate.
I have a team of students who examine the new images to determine if the object is indeed a supernova. Over the past decade, this robotic telescope and my team of assistants have been the world leaders in finding nearby supernovae.
In one kind of supernova, the central part of a star collapses to form a very dense neutron star, like a gigantic atomic nucleus.
The rest of the star rebounds and explodes.
The first person to propose this mechanism was Fritz Zwicky of Caltech. He was a brilliant astrophysicist, but also arrogant and abrasive to his colleagues. He didn't think much of them. In this photograph, perhaps he is showing what he thinks is their typical brain size. He even referred to his colleagues as "spherical bastards," because they are bastards any way you look at them!
This photograph shows the result of the tremendous explosion of a massive star. There are chemically enriched clouds of gas rapidly flying away from the dense, small neutron star that you can see right there, in the center. Some of those gases might become new stars in the future, surrounded by planets and possibly life.
But in some cases, the collapsed core of the massive star becomes even denser than a neutron star. If matter is compressed into a sufficiently small volume, then the local gravitational force becomes so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape.
This kind of an object is known as a "black hole," because nothing can get out of it -- it doesn't shine, and it doesn't reflect light.
It's black! Anything that falls into a black hole gets crushed to nearly infinite density in its center.
Here is my prize-winning photograph of a black hole. Well, I'm joking of course; I just kept the lens cap of the camera on.
How can we find black holes in the Universe? Perhaps we can learn a lesson from our search for supernovae: we take photographs of the sky and simply look for arrows! Oh, not really -- those might just be regions that don't have any stars or other visible objects; they aren't necessarily black holes.
The way we actually find black holes is by their gravitational attraction to objects that are near them. For example, my team has observed some stars that are revolving around some kind of invisible, massive object. We can tell that the unseen object is massive because it strongly pulls on the visible star.
We conducted our observations with the 10-meter Keck telescope in
Hawaii. By analyzing the light from the visible star, we found out that it is rapidly moving in a circle, and the invisible object that is causing this motion has a mass of about 8 times the mass of our Sun. By the process of elimination, it must be a black hole.
We have found several such objects, so now we are quite certain that stellar-mass black holes exist; they were formed by the collapse of massive stars at the end of their lives.
Studies have also shown that gigantic black holes, having masses of millions or even billions of Suns, are located in the centers of most large galaxies, like this one. Galaxies are huge, gravitationally bound collections of tens or hundreds of billions of stars, but at the center of each one there seems to be a supermassive black hole.
Even the center of our Milky Way Galaxy contains a giant black hole.
When we examine stars in the center of our Galaxy, marked by this green square, we find that they are moving very rapidly; here you can see their orbits. Zoom, zoom! The quickly move around something in the center, and its mass is calculated to be about 4 million Suns, yet it is invisible. It must be a black hole! The evidence is very strong.
Theoretically, black holes are described by Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, an advanced theory of gravity. But it is interesting that Einstein himself did not think black holes really exist. Here he is, perhaps sad because he thinks black holes are just a mathematical curiosity. Imagine what his reaction might be now, if he were alive and learned that black holes really do exist. It might be something like this!
Now let me tell you about my third exciting topic, the accelerating expansion of the Universe and the existence of strange "dark energy" of a gravitationally repulsive nature.
About 80 years ago, Edwin Hubble, after whom the famous Hubble Space
Telescope is named, studied other galaxies and found that they are moving away from us. The Universe is expanding -- it is growing larger with time.
From our perspective, the diagram looks like this: here we are, and all of the other galaxies are moving away from us. It looks like we are the center of expansion. Well, why is that? Do the other galaxies not like us? Is it something we said, or do we smell?
No, we think that we would see the same thing no matter which galaxy is our home: all of the others would be moving away from us. This is a property of a uniformly expanding universe.
Here is an analogy. Suppose this rubber hose represents space that is expanding, and the ping-pong balls are galaxies. As I stretch the rubber, each of the balls moves away from all others. No matter which galaxy is my home, I see the others moving away from me, so I think that I'm at the center, but in fact there is no unique center.
Using telescopes like the Hubble, we have measured the current expansion rate of the universe -- it is just some number. But we expect the rate to change with time! This concept goes all the way back to Newton and normal gravity: if I toss an apple up, it slows down because of the Earth's gravity pulling on it. In fact, it eventually stops, turns around, and comes back down to my hand.
Similarly, if the Universe is dense enough, with many galaxies per unit volume, then all of the galaxies will pull on all other galaxies so much that the expansion rate should slow down, eventually stop, and then reverse itself, making the Universe collapse into a hot, dense point -- a "big crunch," the opposite of the "big bang" with which the Universe began.
On the other hand, if I throw the apple very fast, it could escape from Earth, never coming back; the speed has to exceed Earth's "escape velocity." It would gradually slow down, because gravity is still pulling on it, but it would never stop and reverse its motion.
So, in the case of the Universe, if it is not very dense then the pull of the galaxies will be relatively weak, so the expansion of the Universe will slow down but never halt; it will expand forever, becoming progressively darker and colder with time.
By looking back into the past and seeing how much the expansion of the Universe has been slowing down, we can determine the fate of the Universe: a hot big crunch or eternal expansion.
Well, two teams of which I was a member used the Hubble Space Telescope, the Keck telescopes, and other observatories to find and study supernovae in very distant galaxies. The supernovae looked very, very faint. This meant that the galaxies were more distant than expected. Over the past few billion years, the expansion of the Universe must actually have sped up with time, not slowed down as had been expected!
Our result was voted the most important discovery in all areas of science in the year 1998. Here you can see Einstein looking surprised, because the universe he blew out of his pipe is expanding faster and faster, not more slowly as expected.
The data imply the presence of mysterious "dark energy" which, over distances of billions of light years, causes the expansion of the space itself to accelerate with time. The physical nature of dark energy is considered to be the most important question in all of physics.
About three quarters of the matter and energy content of the
Universe consists of dark energy, yet we don't know what it is!
Also, dark energy provides clues to the ultimate goal of theoretical physics: the unification of the quantum theory with general relativity.
How will the Universe end? Well, if dark energy continues to dominate and be repulsive, the Universe will expand faster and faster with time, becoming cold and dark in a few tens of billions of years. But perhaps the properties of dark energy will change with time, causing it to become gravitationally attractive; in that case, the Universe could still collapse on itself in a "big crunch."
My team is gathering additional data to study the nature of dark energy and come to a more complete understanding of our Universe. These studies have provided much fun and excitement in the past, and I anticipate that they will continue to do so.

Он сравнивает новое изображение со старыми изображениями и обычно они выглядят одинакого, но иногда появляется новый объект -- это кандидат суперновы.

небa и просто ищим стрелки! Не совсем - те, могут просто быть районы в которых нет звезд или других видимых объектов, они не обязательно являются черными дырами.
Мы на самом деле находим черные дыры по их гравитационным привлечением к объектам в поблизости. Например, наша группа наблюдала за одной звездой которая вращается вокруг какого-то невидимого, массивного объекта. Мы можем утвердить, что невидимый объект является массивным, поскольку он решительно тянет видимую звезду.
Мы проводили раследования с десяти-(10ти)-метровым телескопом Кек на Гавайях. С другой стороны, если я брошу яблоко очень быстро, оно может улететь от земли и никогда не вернуться; скорость должна быть больше чем “скорость избежания” земли. Оно будет постепенно замедляться, потому что гравитация еще тянит на яблоко, но оно никогда не остановиться и не обратит своё движения.
Таким образом, в случае Вселенной, если она не очень плотная, притяжение галактик будет относительно слабое, поэтому расширение Вселенной будет замедляться, но не остановится. Она будет расширяться навсегда, становясь прогрессивно темнее и холоднее со временем.
