Estonian to English: Estonia and its Capital General field: Other Detailed field: Tourism & Travel
See maa on Eesti. Minevik on mälestus ja tulevik on laul. Mis on selle riigi saladus? Võib-olla on see värskus. Eestlaste rahvussport on seenelkäimine.
Eesti on oravate, mitte jäneste maa - siin saab elada puude ladvus, oksalt oksale hüpates, kordagi maad puutumata, sedavõrd tihedad on siinsed metsad. Ümbrus on vaikne, siin-seal on näha lihtsaid puumaju, tuli aknas ja suitsujuga korstnast vaikusse tõusmas. Majad meenutavad oma tagasihoidlikkuses Jaapanis nähtud hooneid. Valgust on vähe ka kõige päikselisemal talvepäeval. Inimesed on vaiksed, tuuled jäised ja vaatamata suurtele muutustele ühiskondlikus elus viimase kahekümne aasta jooksul, on okupatsiooniaja mälestused visad kaduma.
Translation - English Imagine a country that is so clean you would not even dare to smoke on the streets, a country that is so green you think you are walking on a grassy pasture after refreshing rainfall . Imagine a country that is so modern that internet cafés feel like so yesterday, and modern art is not a bit worse than the Nordic countries’. This country is Estonia. The past is history here and the future is a song. What is the secret of Estonia? Perhaps it is the freshness of the people and the nature. Estonians’ national sport is mushroom picking. Being close to nature in nothing new for the locals. When in countryside, it is hard to find a house that does not have sauna next to it. Sauna is very meaningful place for Estonians- here were the children born; it was a place for washing and also relaxing. Sauna has not lost its’ importance even today. There are saunas in hotels, in urban houses and in camping houses, but the best saunas are still the ones that are old and rural . Be aware that an invitation to someone’s home sauna is a sign of respect and is not polite to turn down.
The mass tourism has not yet conquered neither Estonia, Latvia nor Lithuania which is a good reason to go and visit those countries now. All three Baltic countries are situated in the cost of the beautiful Baltic sea of which sandy beaches are perfect for long walks . In Baltic States are rich for Baroque and Medieval towns, castles, lakes, long sand dunes and pine trees. Baltic States have one of the most well preserved nature among other European countries. Every country has its own identity, language and traditions. With influences from Lutheran and Scandinavian countries, Tallinn is a part of UNESCO World Heritage List. The best way to see Tallinn’s beauty is to view it from the sea. In the Medieval Old Town, one can sense history, but there is also a lot of modern cafés, glamorous bars, hotel rooms with wireless internet and fancy art galleries.
If windmills, forests and changing weather conditions are something you get excited about, then you should travel to Estonia. Estonia has coast line of 3 794 km-s, 1 400 lakes , 800 islands and many national parks. Capital’s upper part of the Old Town with its beautiful streets creates the feeling of being back in Medieval times. The Great walls of Hanseatic town protected it against Germans and Swedes whose visits to Tallinn are nowadays warmly welcomed. The defence tower called Fat Margaret is a tourist magnet that used to protect the city from seaward .
Estonia is a country more of squirrels than of rabbits, because you can move from tree branch to tree branch without taking one step on ground. This is how thick the forests are. It is a quiet country with beautiful wooden houses here and there, having smooth light sallying out their windows and smoke ascending from chimneys into silence . The houses remind of those in Japan due to their modesty. There is little light even during the sunniest winter day. People are calm, winds are frosty and memories from occupation are still noticeable even though great changes have taken place in society during the last two decades .
