Source text - Spanish 1.
10. “No señor”, me dijo.
Translation - English 1. I read the Constitution and the Civil Code from cover to cover. Not finding any law against it, I declared myself a private detective in an intimate and simple ceremony.
2. I ordered a hundred business cards to be printed with a logo which I designed myself.
3. The living room was transformed into an authentic detective’s office. I arranged my books behind the desk, in a glass cabinet which I took from the dining room, I dusted off an old family armchair for clients and I placed the drinks table next to the desk.
4. I paid for an advertisement in the newspaper in which I offered absolute effectiveness and discretion in all manner of investigations.
5. I quit my job at the clip factory over the phone. My boss was disappointed: “You are putting us in a tight spot, Mr. Sanabria. No one knows this company as well as you do. It’s a shame”.
6. I put on a new tie and a blazer. I put my feet up on the desk and set about reading the newspaper, awaiting the call from my first client.
7. At two twenty in the afternoon, after reading my advertisement several times and after devouring the rest of the newspaper, I went to eat. I needed a stiff drink to revive me.
8. When I got to the bar I hung up my hat and my raincoat on the coat stand and ordered a whiskey with water and two sandwiches. On the third bite, a good idea came to me which would help me to publicize myself.
9. I showed the barman the only photograph I carried in my wallet. A recent shot of Mom.
10. “No, sir,” he said. “Her kind don’t come here very often. Are you law enforcement?”
11. “Private detective,” I told him. “It’s likely that this woman has murdered a man. If you see her around here, don’t hesitate to let me know.” I held out my business card to him.

Source text - Spanish No soy yo. No. No soy yo.
No, ochocientos. Sí, mejor ochocientos.
Translation - English That isn’t me. The woman splayed out with her legs open, dressed in the ridiculous hospital gown held together by two straps at the back, that isn’t me. I was always scared of needles. Just imagining the slither of metal piercing the flesh makes my skin crawl, my teeth chatter. They’re going to stick one in her slender vein and she doesn’t scream, she doesn’t cry, she doesn’t run away. No. That isn’t me. It can’t be me. She is someone else. A stupid girl. A real stupid girl because these kinds of things only happen to stupid girls.
The stupid girl is dying of shame because the doctor is going to put his hand between her legs. The stupid girl’s legs shake when she feels the alcohol-soaked cotton swab on her wrist, the needle pinching the vein, a little plastic tube being attached for the fluid to flow through, the sticky Band-Aid pulling at her arm hair. The stupid girl listens to the voice of the nurse who asks the doctor something or other about the anesthetic, and to the doctor who replies, “give her five hundred. No, eight hundred. Yeah, eight hundred would be better.”

Source text - English The stock market posted respectable gains yesterday and set a new record high follow-ing the results from the meeting between President Trump and Chinese leader Xi. However, the market still managed to close below its opening level. Some soft economic data dampened the investors’ enthusiasm and that seems to be carrying over into this morning as the major indices are opening modestly lower.
Last night, President Trump said that trade negotiations with China have already re-sumed but he noted that he doesn’t think the US can accept a “50-50” deal with China. China had previously said it is seeking a “balanced” deal. Separately, US Trade Repre-sentative Robert Lighthizer has proposed tariffs on $4 billion of goods from the EU as a countermeasure for the subsidies that Airbus receives.
OPEC and Russia have agreed to a 9-month extension of the oil production cuts origi-nally agreed upon in 2017. The latest extension will last until March 2020. The group released a statement saying they made the decision to extend the cuts “in view of the underlying large uncertainties and its potential implications on the global oil market”. The cuts are curtailing the production of about a 1.2 million barrels per day and are designed to counter the large increase of production coming from the US. The move by OPEC was largely anticipated by the market and the price of WTI crude is down 0.5% to $58.81.
Spanish to English: Facebook: ¿el nuevo banco central? General field: Bus/Financial Detailed field: Economics
Translation - English Facebook has become an essential part of our social, cultural, economic and political spheres. Now it is looking to become our new global payment system. This was the announcement that came last week from the Libra Association (led by Facebook) along with a whitepaper about the creation of a new cryptocurrency called Libra and its accompanying digital wallet, Calibra.
The first digital currency, Bitcoin, was followed by many others: Ethereum, Dodgecoin, Litecoin, Ripple, XEM, Dash, Monero, Petro, etc. Apparently, we will now have one more as early as the first half of 2020. However, this is not going to be just “one more” as Libra looks more like a fiat currency than a cryptocurrency. In other words, with the gold standard consigned to the history books, along comes the all-powerful Facebook to create a digital currency backed by a basket of financial assets.
Facebook is not alone in this endeavour. Companies like Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, Spotify, eBay, Vodafone, Booking, Mercado Pago and Thrive Capital are among the 28 founding members of the Libra Association that will govern Libra. The goal is to reach 100 members before the official launch of the digital currency. Besides the sheer weight of the consortium of businesses backing the currency, if we add into the equation the 2.32 billion active users enjoyed by Facebook each month (one third of the world’s population), it is not hard to image the potential reach of this new cryptocurrency...
