BONES BRIGADE : AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY
JUNE 22, 2012
TRANSCRIBED BY: WORD OF MOUTH (DB)
STEVE CABALLERO: One of my good friends, or best friends from kindergarten, we actually got in a lot of trouble together. I think, because of that, because of me getting in trouble and almost getting sent to juvenile hall, I remember telling my probation officer, saying like, “I found something that interests me. And this is something I’m going to focus on.”
TONY HAWK: I was this scrawny little kid with, probably, Size Six feet, right? I wanted to go off the high dive, I wanted to be one of the best basketball players. But I just didn't have the size to do that. And so, when I started skating, it gave me a sense of identity, it gave me sense of self-confidence. It gave me a purpose.
LANCE MOUNTAIN: When I was growing up, I was miserable at everything I tried to do. I rode a bike once. Tried to do a wheelie, the front wheel fell off, I crashed. Skateboarding, it was the first time I was good at something. I wasn’t horrible at it, which meant I was good at it.
MIKE MCGILL: You know, I competed in team sports before, as a young kid. And I think I was playing for those coaches’ dreams. I don't know, I don’t think it was about the kids, it was about them reliving their childhood, you know. And I think that kind of just scared me off of team sports. You know, skateboarding, I could just do by myself. I didn't have to have somebody to throw the ball with.
TOMMY GUERRERO: Every sect, every faction in school gave me grief . You know. It didn't matter. Like, the cool kids, the stoners, you know, the jocks(os atletas), fuck it. It was like, “Fuck you, man!” It was the only thing I could find sanctuary in, you know? A sense of peace.
RODNEY MULLEN: I don't know what was wrong with me, but teachers would reach out, “Troubled kid. Is he autistic?” Or, I don't know. I could never speak! I went through huge parts of my life not even speaking. I spoke in whispers, it was weird. Everyone did in the house, mostly. Skateboarding, what it represented, the ability to create, to express myself. It became my voice.

Translation - Portuguese 1
00:00:34,543 --> 00:00:37,640
Com um dos meus melhores amigos
do jardim de infância
00:00:37,898 --> 00:00:44,715
aprontei muito e, por causa disso,
fui mandado para detenção juvenil.
00:00:44,900 --> 00:00:47,309
Lembro-me de falar com meu
agente da condicional
00:00:47,519 --> 00:00:52,068
que tinha encontrado algo
que gostava muito e ia focar nisso.
00:00:59,635 --> 00:01:02,144
Eu era o garoto magrela
00:01:04,189 --> 00:01:08,031
Queria fazer saltos ornamentais,
ser uma dos melhores no basquete
00:01:08,199 --> 00:01:10,994
mas não era alto
00:01:11,137 --> 00:01:14,163
Então quando comecei no skate,
isso me deu senso de identidade,
00:01:14,344 --> 00:01:18,121
Deu-me um propósito.
00:01:25,989 --> 00:01:30,272
Eu era horrível em tudo
que tentava na adolescência.
00:01:30,505 --> 00:01:33,690
Andei de bicicleta uma vez.
Tentei empinar, a roda saiu e eu caí.
00:01:34,593 --> 00:01:38,549
O skate foi a 1ª vez
em que fui bom em algo.
00:01:38,750 --> 00:01:41,809
Eu não era horrível...
Então para mim isso já era bom.
00:01:46,283 --> 00:01:50,878
Eu pratiquei esportes
coletivos antes quando criança.
00:01:51,090 --> 00:01:55,192
Acho que era treinado
por aqueles técnicos melancólicos,
00:01:55,383 --> 00:01:59,642
que não pensavam nas crianças,
mas sim em reviver suas infâncias.
00:01:59,821 --> 00:02:03,245
Acho que isso me assustou
nos esportes coletivos.
00:02:03,446 --> 00:02:08,168
Skate podia ser praticado sozinho.
Não tinha que passar a bola para ninguém.
00:02:11,777 --> 00:02:16,380
Cada grupo, cada facção na escola
dava-me lástima, qualquer um...
00:02:16,608 --> 00:02:19,985
os populares, os maconheiros,
00:02:20,170 --> 00:02:22,685
Eu pensava: "Danem-se eles".
00:02:22,902 --> 00:02:29,719
Foi o único lugar onde encontrei
tranquilidade. Um senso de paz.
00:02:33,011 --> 00:02:37,308
Não sei o que tinha de errado,
mas os professores me taxavam:
00:02:37,488 --> 00:02:41,224
"Garoto-problema", "Ele é autista?"
ou sei lá o que.
00:02:41,421 --> 00:02:46,273
Não podia falar. Fiquei uma etapa
da minha vida sem nem falar.
00:02:46,447 --> 00:02:48,618
00:02:48,777 --> 00:02:51,578
Todos agiam assim em casa.
00:02:51,815 --> 00:02:55,483
O skate, pelo que representava,
o poder de criar e de se expressar,
00:02:55,679 --> 00:02:58,258
tornou-se a minha voz.
00:03:00,610 --> 00:03:06,217
